I'm expecting a decent number of calls tomorrow or at somepoint thereafter based on the amount of emails and contact with coaches that I have had. In the phone conversations though, what do we talk about? Is it any different from an email besides being more personal? And is it just going to be coaches that I have already spoken to calling or will there be some surprises? And lastly, is it just DI coaches that can call now?

I’m always awkward on the phone, but usually the first contact from the coach via phone is just a “hello, wanted to let you know we’re interested in you” etc. thing. Not much pressure.

However, it would be a good idea to come up with a list of questions to ask. If you never ask questions, they’ll think you aren’t interested in them- which may or may not be the case.

There will definitely be some surprises… perhaps not on day 1, but there will definitely be some coaches who you never even exchanged emails with.

xrun, there are a number of posts on this forum with some suggestions for questions to ask. You can fine tune one of those lists to things that really are important to you.

xposted with this great list of questions put up by a last-year recuit! Yay!

Another way to make sure you have a reasonable conversation with the coach would be to meet with your current high school coach and have him help you focus on issues that are important to you, and come up with questions that get that information for you without having awkward phrasing.

For example:

Maybe you want to know about the practice schedule both during the season and in the off season, but you’re worried about whether practice will conflict with classes you want to take. You can ask direct questions about hours of practice, if they are always at the same time each day, if students seem to have any trouble scheduling their classes around practices, if practices can be shifted to accomodate classes and so on. The answer to this question will tell you an awful lot about how academics fit with athletics at this school, how the coach views classes (an inconvenient nuisance, or the reason you are at the school, or somewhere in between.) You can also ask if the coach can give you the name of a current athlete studying in your major so that you could ask him how this is working out.

I don’t know what your list of priorities is with choosing a school, but if you have a HS coach who can help you figure out how to ask good questions, that would be great. Don’t ask questions because you feel you should. It’s OK to say “I’m just getting started on this process, and I appreciate you calling. I’m really interested in X University, and I’m sure I’ll have questions as time goes on, but for today, I’m fine. Is there anything you want me to know about your program that makes you think I’d be a good fit?”

Is it reasonable to conclude that one WON’T be getting any calls on July 1st from certain coaches if one has not received any emails from those coaches prior to July 1st?
