What do you carry around your first year at UCSD?

Shopping for new school bags to replace my ratty canvas backpack, lol
But I can't pick without knowing what exactly I have to put in these bags! :(

Do freshmen living on campus carry around a lot of things? A few notebooks and textbooks, or maybe a whole laptop?
Thanks for any help!

I bought a larger backpack with laptop separator to avoid having to lug around a laptop case aswell to class when needed. Laptop separators also double as a notebook or textbook, etc separator aswell.

You will 99.8% of the time NEVER have to carry around textbooks

Since I will never have to carry around textbooks, would it be necessary to buy a backpack? I have an old over the shoulder type bag and I’m debating whether or not to buy a new backpack

I mean, you could wait until you get here. I brought a backpack and several tote bags/shoulder bags and my backpack was rarely used. It’s easier to just throw your laptop in a shoulder bag and go. it really depends on the person though

A well made messenger bag works aswell… even with textbooks. But then again if you’re carless and gonna need a bag to haul stuff you bought from the store a bag would come be indispensable…

You don’t need to take textbooks to most classes. I don’t think I ever took a textbook to one of my classes.

You probably will only need a notebook or laptop, and something to write with. Nothing else really.

is a 15.6 inch laptop too big to put on a class desk

Some of the desks are really small. I sometimes find it more comfortable to put my laptop on my lap while i’m taking notes.

it will hang off to the side a bit for some of the tables, but its not that big of a problem. my laptop is 15 inches and tho it hangs off the side on the tables, i never had a problem with it.

that only works if your a girl

guys will kill all their sperm that way

Really!!!^

Even if you only use it infrequently, I would definitely bring a bag thats big/comfortable enough to carry around a laptop, notebook, and at least one textbook. If you think you will be doing a lot of studying in the library, you will probably need it to bring all of your study materials with you.

For daily use though, you can probably get away with a small bag that holds a notebook, pen/pencil, wallet, keys, etc. If you plan on bringing a laptop to class you can carry your computer in a laptop sleeve and again, put it in a smaller bag.

well, heat kills sperm, and since laptops get incredibly hot when placed on your lap… its definitely not good for your sperm count.

that’s why tight jeans are bad for guys cuz it pushes the balls closer to the body, and raises the temperature of the balls and can decrease sperm production.

sorry for this somewhat inappropriate explanation haha… just stating some things i learned in bio

Haha, before I went to the second page I literally said “Really!?” out loud.

do you guys recommend netbooks?

@happyhappy

You make new sperm everyday. I think guys will be fine with their laptops on their laps for a little bit. If you’re worried about your laptop ruining your chances of getting your partner pregnant, buy a laptop pad.

Thank you for your input everyone! I learned more than I expected to say the least…LOL

@ KingsElite:

It doesn’t matter if you make new sperm every day. Obviously, putting your laptop on your lap every now and then isn’t a problem. Same with wearing tight jeans. But if it becomes an every day thing, it can permanently reduce your sperm count and increases the risk of infertility. There have been numerous studies done on this, and its better safe than sorry.

LOLLLLLLL at this conversation, namely kings hahahahahahha

Alright, I’ll take your word for it. But if worse comes to worst, there’s always adoption. Love your child no matter what its genetics are. :)
