What do you guys consider middle/upper class?

I didn't know where to put this, so I just put it here.

I always considered $250,000+/year income upper class. However, I saw a post that considered $175,000/year upper class. My family personally makes 200k+ a year, but I do not consider my self upper class.

What do you guys think?

I think 175-250k would be upper middle class, whereas 250k+ (as you mentioned) would be upper class. I hope this helps :)

over 225k upper class, over 175k upper-middle

So what would 200-250k be? Lower upper class? Upper upper middle class?

“So what would 200-250k be? Lower upper class? Upper upper middle class?”

oh, sorry haha that would be upper middle class too (fail for me :P)

I consider 200k to be upper class, and where you are to be upper middle.

Depends a bit on where you live, but $100k is good enough for upper middle class almost everywhere. I don’t think you can set a general lower limit for being upper class. It’s going to vary wildly based on many different circumstances.

Call me ignorant, but I do not believe $250k constitutes the “upper class.”

My family makes roughly that amount, yet I do not feel rich at all. Don’t get me wrong, I live a nice, comfortable life and I appreciate my parents for allowing me to do so. However, when I go to friends houses, I know that I want to have a higher standard of living than my parents have. They are truly upper class. My view may be distorted since I live in a relatively affluent small city, but I know that I would not be satisfied at this income level. I desire more out of life.

i make 82k a year and someone told me i am not poor… i mean im not actually poor but we are tight for cash sometimes since my parents suck with money

What do you do?

my family i mean

The definition of poor varies greatly for individuals.

I think over 100k is upper middle class, and over 200k is upper class. Over 400k is just wealthy and if you’re complaining about money at that point, you need some serious perspective.

Depends where you live.

100k here is loaded, considering that most houses only cost about 60-150k. Nice houses in the “expensive” neighborhood start at 300k.

If you made 200k a year here, you could easily buy a decent sized house and not even have a mortgage.

I mean, my house is four bedrooms, 3 baths, kitchen, dining room, living room, 2 atics, and a laundry room. I think it’s like 2500 sq ft? And it’s appraised at 120k (for taxes), but my parents (who work almost exclusively in real estate) said that it’d probably be only 100k if you could find a good buyer.

In other parts of the country, you’re living in the ghetto with a 500k house, let alone 100k.

82 is NOT poor here. I guess it is in other parts of the country… but it’s SO difficult for me to imagine someone with that much money actually considering themselves poor… I mean… I just can’t picture it. At all. My family makes soooo much less than that.

Your parents make half a million a year, and you don’t feel rich? That puts you well within the top 1% of all Americans, and the top 0.1% of all people in the world… Take a mission trip to Africa or something, lol. I lived in NYC, parents made <$20K a year, but they worked themselves to the bone for me and my siblings.

^ Nobody in this thread has parents that make more than $500k a year. What are you reading?

NYC and less than 20k? That’s pretty amazing.

See everyone makes me think that that would be impossible (for NY)… but I’m starting to think that people really don’t know what being poor is.

The only reason my parents make 21k is that my dad finally retired from the military (part-time)… so he gets about 12k a year in retirement for that. …I just realized how little my parents actually make working.

…And I’m sure that they wouldn’t appreciate me putting this online. XD Oh well.

$250k+ is upper class, you can live a nice life. $90k - 249k+ is upper middle class, a nice life in some areas of the country.

I’m not sure, but $50-90k is middle class and below $30k is lower class. Anything above $1 million is just filthy rich.

I think middle class is about 110 to 190 thousand and upper middle class is around 190 to 280 thousand and upper class is anything higher than that.

I live in Texas and my parents make about 150 thousand a year and we’re somewhere between poor and middle class.

^ You are no where near poor. The cost of living in Texas is crazy low, trust me, I used to live there. A family friend who was making about $100k with a B.S. was living in a 3500+ sq. ft. house and driving a brand new BMW.

Our house in Texas was significantly larger and nicer, and my parents didn’t make near as much as they do now, since only my dad worked.
