<borat> The jews! </borat>

i dont understand the problem with upenn... most schools that are University of ___ are U_. UMich, UT, UNC, UVA, UCLA, etc... the only 1 i can think of that is U of _ that is never referred to it that way would be Cal or Berkeley.

it it were Pennsylvania University, then I could see the annoyance of calling it UPenn to differentiate between that and penn state - but its not. and unfortunately saying you go to "Pennsylvania" doesn't sound right as opposed to saying you go to "Michigan" or "Virginia."

I also don't really see what the big deal is with saying upenn to differentiate between penn state. Yea, the more toolish kids who want people to know they're going to an ivy league school will emphasize the UUUpenn aspect and that's annoying, but it's also just as annoying when I tell people I'm applying to "penn" ED cause I didn't realize adding the U bugged everyone so much, and then they look at me questionably and inevitabely ask... penn state...?? And I have to launch into the explanation that the U would have cleared up in the first place.

There's kind of that whole other brand of "I'm above people knowing I'm applying to an ivy league school" tool. Honestly, if "upenn" wasn't an ivyleague school, and it was just another penn school the people going there would want some way of distinguishing themselves. I feel like it's a really affected/preconceived "we're so chill we don't care if people think we go to a "lesser" school" attitude and I hope the majority of the students are above weirdness like that.

The problem with UPenn is that it is incorrect. Penn is correct, end of story. Its not that it has to do with we are better than X or don't want people to think Y, its just that many people consider it correct when it isn't.

As for the acronym argument, UP is being phased out, plus UP is a lot more ambiguous than for instance USC. But really, Lee Corso is not going to say "Ohio State is going to beat UMich this year in the Horseshoe", he'd say Michigan or maybe maybe UM (Or maybe he thinks Carr has a shot this year?). With the exception of UConn and perhaps Delaware, very few if any say the U unless saying the acronym (UT) or as part of University in the the full name (University of Texas), not the commonly used name (Texas). As for Berkeley, it's UC-Berkeley when abbreviating the University of California part (saying Berkeley is needed to differentiate from Davis, Riverside, Los Angeles, etc and UC-B is ambiguous and I've never heard it used to describe the Golden Bears) or Cal when refered to in an athletic sense. But they are not alone, CU-Boulder is just Colorado, not UCol or something lame.

When they add the U to the helmet and endzone, let me know and then I'll say I go to UPenn. Until then, LETS GO PENN !

Even Lee Stetson is ****ed when kids say "UPenn." Look at the first thing he says in this chat transcript:

Lee Stetson: Hello, this is Lee Stetson, Dean of Admissions at the University of Pennsylvania. Just for everybody's information, Penn does not refer to itself as UPenn. I look forward to trying to answer as many questions as I can given the limited time that we have.

What's wrong with saying UPenn?

Neither the faculty, staff, or student body of Penn prefers UPenn to Penn. The fact that Penn goes to great efforts to make sure you call it Penn (find me one Penn brochure that refers to Penn as "UPenn") and that people will still call it UPenn in spite of this is simply an insult to the university, a clear display of ignorance, and a surefire indicator that you aren't really interested in Penn when you apply.

That's what's wrong with it.

And should that fail to sway you, Penn Admissions doesn't look favorably upon it either.

well, upenn better grow up if it gets insulted by a letter.

what a bunch of toolbags to get worked up over this. deal with it. people are going to call it upenn because penn state is the more known school to the average person. until that changes, just accept that a lot of people are going to call it upenn and all your whining isn't going to change anything.

I live in the surburbs of Philly and everyone here refers to "Pennsylvania State University" as PSU. Once in a while it will be Penn State but never Penn

The "UPenn" name is not because of Penn State but because of the website. In fact, the name "UPenn" as a colloquial term has become more popular than it was decades ago when Penn was arguably less prestigious than it is now due to the website and email domain.
