What do you hate or dislike about GWU (George Washington University) and NYU (New York University)?
My daughter has several choices after receiving many college acceptances but at this point her top 2 choices are NYU and GWU. We've heard all of the students that LOVE the schools and seen all of the positive promo materials. Now we want to know what people DISLIKE about the schools. Opinions on the schools itself, classes, professors, food, local area, students, community... all of that. PLEASE NOTE: Please only answer if you have actual experience with the schools. Whether you're a student, staff, live in the area or have a family member that's been there. Please don't answer if you've just heard 'rumors'.

My sister currently goes there, and the obvious downside is cost. You’re looking at about $60,000 total without FA or scholarships. Also, if your daughter is into partying, NYU is not the place. They are usually shut down within minutes. Finally, the campus is quite unorthodox. It is not the prototypical college campus because it is smack dab in the middle of NYC.

Hope this helps! And congrats to your daughter!

Thanks! We have actually visited NYU and the feel was good, the city was perfect (since we’re from Boston)… Also, money isn’t too big of an issue.

It might help to know what you’re daughter is looking to study - as that way, some of us may be in her department and be able to tell you about the faculty/classes, etc.

She’s undecided. She got accepted to the Liberal Arts Core Program

Hi MomCandy - I have a D that is a Junior at GWU (Elliott School - studying in China right now). I would say as a parent, I like the school about 95% so that probably says a lot BUT you want to know negatives so here goes:

It is still a good size university and there is a lot of red tape. I had heard that before D started and it is very true! I haven’t had to call administration lately but when I have had to call - really ridiculous. D says the same - anytime she has had to deal with administration - takes a long time.

Class registration is a nightmare for freshman - especially if you live on the west coast. 4am to register for classes that you are locked out of within seconds of logging on. Probably the one of the worst experiences you could imagine. That said, I haven’t heard any complaints from soph/junior years.

I was concerned with safety but we have had no problems yet many kids get their cell phones taken (especially iPhones) at the Metro stop on campus. If your D goes - she must keep her stuff with her (laptops at the library!) and hold on tight to cell phones in public. This of course is not because students take them, but they are in a major city with a major Metro station right on campus.

So I am sitting here trying to come up with number 4 and can’t - I guess that is a good thing! If you have any other questions, feel free to pm me. Good luck - hard decision, we are waiting on a decision for S at NYU (didn’t apply to GW - music major). I’m guessing I could probably list the same 3 items in the next few years if he matriculates.
PS: one great thing…D will graduate in 4 years! If you are looking at Elliott school - advising is awesome.
