You must be Pell Grant eligible.

Anyone reading this thread, please understand that when a school says “we will meet 100% of need” … this does NOT mean they will meet it with grants. There might be work study, loans, etc., and if your EFC is > 0, there might be CASH requirements from YOU, your parents or BOTH. IF you have need, applying for OUTSIDE scholarships (such as the Gates) is always a good idea. This outside $ can make your life MUCH easier (such as, you might NOT have to do work study) …

Who’s qualified for this scholarship?

So if I have a family of 5 and make $79000, then I would not be eligible?

He has an average GPA. Strong FB player, good essays becuase the topics appear to be somewhat original. Any other suggestions for how I can help him have a strong essay?

Is work study really a bad thing?

Hello everyone, I was just wondering. The system crashed the day of the deadline this year (2013) so they gave an extension of an hour. The extension was random so I still submitted late. I tried to contact them at several different emails, but don’t know what will happen. I explained my situation in the email and I do know of their strict policy of late submissions. The crash may have caused a lot of chaos, but do any of you know if a 2 minute late application is automatically unconsidered? or if it undergoes some sort of process before getting rejected?

Hi, I’m currently a finalist for the Gates scholarship but my family does not qualify for the Pell Grant. My family of 6 makes between $50,000-$70,000 a year, and I noticed that in a post above you said that $64,000 would be pushing it. I’m still sending my stuff in, but I was wondering how important the qualifications for the Pell Grant are in deciding whether a finalist will win the scholarship? Do you know of any past winners that did not qualify for the Pell Grant? I would really appreciate it, thanks.

@sensei13: Everything I have read indicates you must be Pell eligible for the the scholarship.

What would be a good start for a sophomore (Class of 2015) aiming for the gates millenium scholarship?
I have a low to mid 90 average and was just wondering what else I could do?

If you happened to be a Student who we t under the process of DACA, and not how ssn, can you still qualify for the gates. Millenium scholarship.

Is pell grant eligibility based on income or EFC? Because my mother makes 85,000 a year but because my older brother is in college our EFC would be cut in half

I’m a low income student >25k for a family of 6 and have gone and participated in a leadership camp for my county for 3 summers. I have also participated in a STEM camp for two years. I am applying for a summer job and will be volunteering at an animal shelter for the rest of my summer. Do you think including this in my essays demonstrates leadership? I unfortunately have no leadership titles but could have one by senior year before I send my application. I have a 3.65 uw GPA and a 4.65 w gpa . I’m a female African American student and currently #10/480 in my class my SAT is 1880. I have struggled in my life so I never had the time to actually be involved in ECs like I should have. Do you think I have a shot? Also can leadership roles be memberships? Or being a flag football player for two years?

@Marrissa You meet all of the legibility requirements, not to mention the fact that you are volunteering at an animal shelter is really unique. That can be tuned into a great essay. I think you have a great shot. Just to make sure you write elaborate essays when the time comes. I am a 2014 Scholar and I felt like it was an essay contest. It does not matter much what you have done or gone through, but how well you are able to tell your stories. If you have any questions, feel free to message me. I am more than happy to assist you .
