"What do you hope to contribute to the Brown community?"

How did you guys address this part of the Why Brown essay? Is it okay to just talk about clubs you’ll join/research you’ll do, or did you talk about a new club that you hope to start at Brown?

My two cents is that it isn’t just about clubs. It might be a different viewpoint because of your life experiences you bring to Brown. Or a personality trait that you think will make you a valuable classmate or student in the Brown community. It might be a hobby that is unusual or something like that. You could also talk about clubs, but you want to think about the question fairly broadly, IMHO.

“Is it okay to just talk about…”. Good thing about a school like Brown is never having to ask is it OK. Open curriculum, respect for contrarian points of view, social activism, not hiding who you are, etc are all the norm on the Brown campus.

What would you contribute…

I divergent point of view, passion for a cause, intellectual curiosity for an area of study often neglected, being a great friend, commitment to bake cookies every Wednesday, the kid with a ferret … it doesn’t matter and it’s not wrong or right if it’s right your contribution. I know dozens of Brown students and they all have three things in common:

  1. They are all very strong academically
  2. They are all passionate about something that with a little digging becomes the obvious reason they stood out.
  3. The only thing they universally have in common is 1&2

So be authentic and honest (not defined by right and wrong) and describe what you will contribute.

Good luck!

Thank you @intparent and @Nocreativity1, that was really helpful!
