Hi,

I've been researching majors lately to get a better grip on what I want to major in college. I'm a starting senior in high school and just want you opinions based on my likings.

I am really fascinated by math and science. I love calculus, physics, and chemistry and have taken AP classes pertaining to them. I also love computers and know a little programming (C and python). I have a lot of knowledge in Linux. I also like building stuff. One thing I do hate is writing.

Any thoughts on the direction I should be heading in? I have some ideas of what I want to do.
Thanks.

Why do you hate writing? You'll probably have to use it in almost any type of work you do in real life.
Your description is too broad so I can't be too exact but you will probably like engineering. Electrical engineering, for instance, will include a lot of math/calculus, some physics, computers, programming, and you could expect to work with Linux if you go in the more software related fields of electrical engineering. You won't get much chemistry with that though, unless you choose a bio-medical emphasis or similar.

Computer engineering sounds like the best major if you like computers and physics. It involves the physical components themselves in addition to the programming that may be involved, so it's good for someone who likes to build stuff.

EE/CS for computers. Chem E if you really love chem that much. Your description makes you seem like the type of person who would just enjoy engineering in general, as you like math/science/making stuff, so you probably won't go wrong in choosing other engineering majors as well. It all boils down to what you're REALLY interested in. I would have been satisfied with Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering for a major but I was even more interested into learning about computers/electronics and hence, I settled on EECS. Try imagining what topics that you would really enjoy getting into the thick of.

Alright thanks. I was looking at computer engineering before I made this and it seems that that area is what I"m looking for. One question. What type of programming would I do in computer engineering?

It's not as common, but you should definitely look into Materials Science & Engineering if you're interested in both chemistry and physics. It has a lot more of them than you'll get in EE or CompE. If you're interested in research based work, there's a lot in computational materials and modeling where you could do programming type stuff if you want to stay active in it.

exactly why i'm doing material's engi.. can't deceive between a chemistry or physics focused engineering degree. It seems to be the best compromise.

programming is used in any engineering discipline that require modelling, and the ones that does not are far and few between (i can't think of one at least..). maybe some specialities of bioengineering.

and you hate writing? enjoy your essays.. /pat

I just dislike writing. Doesn't mean I'm not good at it. :p
