Hi there, just thought about my ECs and decided to ask you guys, is fishing popular among youngmen in US (I'm an international transfer student).
Fishing is my main passion, and I'm going to make my essay through it, so is my hobby a weak or strong point? neither?:) In my country volunteer work is not provided, and almost all students are not involved in such kind of activities as in USA. Also I'm good at sports>basketball, bodybuilding. I think I'm a really good fisherman not far from professional
Academic EC is human geography, I have outstanding national and international awards, but my major will be business administration, will it be considered?

It’s an interesting hobby – but nothing that will overly impress anyone. I don’t see how a college will particularly see how it adds value to their community. It’s part of you – and definitely list it. But unfortunately, its affect on others is marginal – so won’t be much of any boost for you.

Your ECs–even academic ones–don’t have to relate to your major–they’ll be considered regardless.

Is there really nothing you can do to volunteer? Most U.S. schools don’t specifically provide any opportunities–you have to go look for them outside of school. If there actually aren’t any volunteer opportunities, though, then there’s obviously nothing you can do. But don’t be afraid to look outside of what’s school-sponsored, as community service–if it’s something you like doing–can be helpful in admissions. Colleges want to see that you’re giving back to your community.

So, fishing is a bad idea for essay? They say to tell them about things I’m really passionate about, so here it is. I like to feel nature to be a part of it, I think it can describe me as a person, am I not right?:(

Geography is an academic EC, maybe I can connect them in my essay, how do you think?

I don’t necessarily think that fishing would make a bad essay; since you’re passionate about it, I think that’ll enable you to write a strong essay with that topic. However, even though it could work well as an essay and will help as an EC, I wouldn’t consider it an extraordinarily strong EC.

I wouldn’t try to do an essay on two topics. EC essays should be focused on one EC or one group of closely related ECs.

Well I believe that it is pretty unusual, also I’m from Belarus-it can be a little hook, my hs gpa is ~3,7 on american scale, SAT will be taken in October
T26E4, RedSeven thank you for your help:)
I will appreciate all your feelings about this thread

Buuuump, any other opinions? Maybe my preparation and performance on national Olympiads will be better?though I think it is possible to connect geography with fishing…discovering diffeerent lakes, rivers, stay alone with nature, it is a part of geography, why not:)

Ehh your ECs are slightly worse than mine and I got into a top school

By all means write about fishing and how it connects to your interests and what it says about you. As an interviewer, I get tired of hearing about the same old school-based ECs - editor of the school paper, captain of the math team, president of the honor society. The memorable students are invariably the ones who do something different and have something unique to say about themselves. And someone who fishes can contribute to the community by participating in the outdooring club (which many schools have).

wavylays94, thanks for your opinion.
M’s Mom, you make me happy:) yeeh, I almost agree with you, it really makes me unique, and I will participate this summer in some festivals and competitions, these exploration really help me in geography studies, and that is an amazing kind of spending your free time:)

Fishing is a wonderful EC, and one that many learned men have spent years pursuing (especially fly fishing). It is a sport that allows for reflection, has so many variables and requires patience. Makes for a much better essay than most. Heck I think that much time for self-reflection makes a more interesting person than the average American teenager.

MizzBee, thanks for your awesome post:)
Now I have no doubts what to write.
An amazing feeling when a big pike is on the the end of you line, your is going to break and you struggle with it:)

In my opinion you should go for whatever you truly are. Express yourself in am manner that shows your true self in a good way that the reader is captivated :)

I’m sure it will go well :)

paki: note the 2.5 months since the poster originally asked his question.
