What do you think about scholarships and admission?

My parents tend to dismiss any serious talk about attending Wake Forest because of the price but they are definitely open to me attending if I recieve a scholarship to lower the cost to that of an in state tuition. I, however, still have hope that maybe that will happen and I want to know your opinion too. These are my stats. Please read them if you don't mind and tell me what you think as far as scholarships go. Also, the merit app says you need a 1450 to receive the Reynolds or Carswell and although I definitely am not counting on getting them at all, should I still apply for them even though I have a 1410? Please let me know anyone's opinion. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

SAT: 1410 old, 2040 new (670 reading, 740 math, 700 writing as highest scores)
SAT II's: 750 chem
GPA: 4.9167 W, 4.0 uw
8 AP's total as of end of next year (chem, us, lang&comp, euro, stat, calc AB, Enviro and physics)
euro: 4, that's the only one I know so far
6/468

as for EC's:
Varsity cheerleader, president of women in science, leader of a middle school girls bible study, very involved in church, track and field, SADD, volunteer in an Alzheimer's unit, volunteer with Hospice, Key Club (service chair), Math team, beta club, NHS, a job (I think i avg like 8 hrs/wk)

other stuff: a leadership conference, Tar Heel girls state where I received my party's nomination for Lt. Governor, a nursing program for a week, and various mission trips

THANKYOU!

I'm not too great at predicting chances; all I can do is tell you from my experience. I applied for all the scholarships (with a 1410, 3.9 uw) and got a polite "thanks, but no thanks" letter. But that's just going on raw stats, not counting all the ECs, essays, etc. (I didn't think my essays or ECs were that shabby though.)

But it's hard to say for sure exactly what would happen. It's a lot of work to apply (I think there's like four essays for the Reynolds and Carswell), but you never know until you apply. There are many other scholarships out there besides those two though. Depending on what town/county of NC you're from, that may make you eligible for one (unfortunately, there wasn't one for my area!) Your stats look good...I suppose if you really wanted to take the SAT again to try to boost it those extra 40 points you could though.

Good luck!

It never hurts to apply. The Reynolds and Carswell require three extra essays, if I recall correctly, and if they haven't changed the procedure since I applied two years ago, but the extra work writing the essays will definitely be worth it if you do get a scholarship. I've always been gotten the impression that Wake, and most other schools, take students only as seriously as they take themselves. What I mean is that if a student applies for the Reynolds and Carswell, they might get more consideration for lesser scholarships. That might be totally wrong, but I'd still recommend applying for everything.

You mention being very involved in your church; if you don't mind my asking, what denomination are you? I only ask because Wake has the Poteat Scholarship for North Carolina Baptists. I think that the Poteat is worth 1/2 tuition.

Hmm...I don't know what grade you are but if you are going to be a junior next year (not a senior) then...read below

Not bad test scores...so have you considered taking the PSAT? If you get above like a 215 (out of 240) it is likely that you will get the National Merit Scholarship, this scholarship is good enough for almost all the colleges in the US. And it can pay up to $8,000 to $10,000! And for some of the universities, they can give a full ride, just for having the scholarship!

So I suggest this: Hit the PSAT books and get cracking!

P.S. : THIS IS MY FIRST POST. I have just been looking at forums all these days, now i've decided to actually write some. Hope it helps!

Wake forest doesn't give out much for NMS. If you choose them they give $750 to i think 2000~ depending on need.

Edit:
This may sound stupid, but for all of those scholarships is that all the merit aid you can receive. If you don't mind me asking Juba2jive, did that mean you received 0 merit aid, or will they just give you non-scholarship merit aid?

reynolds and carswell are about impossible to get. i had 1540 SAT, 4.0 uw, valedictorian, national merit scholar, good ecs (although no real leadership positions may have hurt), and didn't get one, but i did get $26000 in other scholarships.

i would say you should apply for reynolds anyhow because, i don't know this for certain, but i would think that it would help your chances for other scholarships.

Nope, didn't get any merit aid whatsoever (except for the NC Legislative Tuition Grant, if that counts, which basically everyone from NC gets).

The "thanks but no thanks" letter I was referring to was about the Reynolds and Carswell. Of course, I'd already figured out that I hadn't gone on in the competition because I didn't get that letter till April 1 or so and finalists were invited up sometime in February or March, lol.

Thanks y'all. I am a rising senior and I have taken the SAT 3 times already so I'm hesitant to repeat it. Word on the street is that 4 SATs looks bad. I dunno who to believe, but what I am sure of is that no one actually knows the truth about that statement. I just don't wanna risk looking desperate for a few more points (in my opinion 3 times taking the same test is just as bad as 4, haha, but I did it anyways). I will apply for the Reynolds and the Carswell and I'll just hope and pray everything works out. I'm not even sure I want to go to Wake and to be honest it is because of the way Wake is stereotyped. Rich, white kid school just isn't too appealing to me. I KNOW, I KNOW it's just a stereotype, but there must be some truth to this...right? Don't get me wrong, I am still VERY interested in it, just not set on it. I'm actually not sure on any school though. Come March, unless finances say it all, I am bound to be the most indecisive college bound student on the face of the planet. Hmmm, the more I analyze this, the more I see that having finances dictate my college decision might not be so bad after all!!! haha!

anyways, thanks for your help and any other opinions would be much appreciated!!!!!!!! O, and Manu2007, welcome to CC!!!!!!
