What do you think are the most prestigious careers?

any job that contributes to society in a positive way - which is more noble than prestigious, but whatever.

A career that develops a cure for HIV/AIDS might be considered prestigious. Why is prestige so important to you? Do what you truly have passion for, not what might bring you status and prestige!

There is way too much emphasis on status, ranking and prestige on CC.

I didn't say ONLY jobs that make a lot of money are prestigious, but for the most part, prestige comes with making a lot of money.

-Professor (with PhD)
-Supreme Court Justice
-Senator
-CEO or Owner of a highly successful company
-Scientist/Doctor

Social Activist.

Writing for the NY Times or being the anchorman/woman of a major news channel would be very prestigious. I'm thinking twice about law, my intended career.

yeah, i think althletes make too much money. one unfortunate thing is that they seem to get money for having natural talent, but is that really a bad thing when those having natural "talent" in terms of intelligence seem to get the most high paying jobs, generally speaking?

And as I've already said, the prestige isn't important to me in terms of a career choice. I just wanted to hear what people thought.

the highest paid athletes definitely get WAY to much. its absurd. BUT the reason is because they make so much money for the team they are on with endorsments, jerseys, hats, shirts, etc. think about how much money is made during a game of baseball or basketball with food sales and ticket sales, and also sales made on merchandise year round. so gm's and team have the money to give players ridiculous amounts of money. i think the most overpayed players are baseball players (who also ARE the most highly paid athletes). though i guess they bring in the most money, they still don't do anywhere near as much mork as other athletes such as basketball players or tennis players. they get paid $34555300303 to get loaded on drugs and to ruin the reputation of their sport. (not all of them of course)

well with that said, i think teachers and doctors are the most reputable professions. also those who do a lot of volunteer work. i'm a military brat so it's weird for me to say that only being in the military is reputable, since i'm so familiar with the different ways it works and how some people only join b/c they have nothing else to do and want fast money. but as a whole, i do believe being in the military is one of the most respectable things to do, esp right now.

Prestigious is: CEO of a Big Company, Lawyers, Doctors, and Political jobs (senate, mayor, president, etc.)

Honorable is different then prestigious. All jobs can be honorable if you the person is. For me honorable is: Police Officers, Firefighters, Teachers, Doctors, Nurses, all Military Officers, any union job.

^ I second the difference between prestigious and honorable. when I think prestigious I think doctor, lawyer, ceo, etc.

organic chemists

engineer ?

investment banker?

how about these?

Director. I mean, like Spielberg sort of directing, or Joss Whedon.

Both, to me, are deities.

Athletes dont make to much money, the majority dont make that much. The athelete celebrities make alot because they are celebrities.

coqui , why is it absurd. they make alot less than britney spears and other pop singers, But they actually do have talent and are much more entertaining to watch.

Tiger woods is the Richest athlete, he is only worth 80 mil. 80 mil is not that much money.

and basketball & golf athletes make the most money. 3rd would be Idie car and nascar. The tennis then Soccer. Baseball is down their.

Tiger Woods

Michael Schumacher

Peyton Manning

Michael Jordan

Shaquille O'Neal

Kevin Garnett

Andre Agassi

David Beckham

Alex Rodriguez

Kobe Bryant

Hey, Thanks! I'm working on a biopharmaceutical right now with NIH that inactivates HIV.

Anyway, here's what I think are the most pretigious:

President/CEO/Executive position at a large corporation, Full Professor/Department Head at a prestigious school, high law/political positions (ie federal judge, supreme court justice, senator, etc.).

The jobs that I respect the most:

K-12 teachers, Police, Firefighters, soldier (non-commissioned and commissioned), science researchers (staff positions) at NIH branches/sub-branches, especially NIAID, NCI, and CCR.

Actually, Maria Sherapova, because of her beauty, youth, and talent makes a lot more outside of tennis. For example, she has had contracts with many other advertising companies and she's earned a ridiculous fortune.

I would put Maria #2 on that list after Tiger Woods.

As a matter of fact, Tiger woods and Maria sherapova are outside the typical 'sports stars'. The reason: their uniqueness to the game. Indeed, who ever expected a young african american to become such a star in golf? Who would have expected a young 17 year old girl to win wimdledon?

When the impossible happens, when the unbelievable becomes real - that's when these people become extremely powerful.

Tiger Woods made $78 million LAST YEAR ALONE! I wouldn't call that chump change.

Bill gates has 69 BIllion.

78 MIllion is packet change.

Prestigious careers would be doctor or lawyer

Prestigious JOBS would be President, CEO, and other high-ranking positions. But they are only jobs because they don't span throughout the career of that individual. Before you were president, you were a campaign volunteer. Before you were CEO, you were an entry-level analyst. But doctors and lawyers start out as doctors and lawyers (after getting their degrees).

I don't think Athlete or Actor/Actress is "prestigious" because to me, prestigious is something really highly-regarded that can be attained with hard work and not necessarily talent (although talent matters too). No matter how hard someone tries to be an athlete or actor, they may never reach their goal without talent, while others with little education (but lots of talent cultivated by a different type of hard work) will jump into the NBA or be the next teenage heartthrob.

Teacher/Professor is more prestigious in other countries than they are in the USA. I wish it was more like that, cuz education is the root to almost all advancement and its results are what sustains the economy and standard of living.

Doctors wouldn't be doctors and lawyers wouldn't be lawyers without teachers and professors.

Professors SUCK (majority of em). Prestigious? More like "You think you can argue with me? I'll win over you! Shutup before I give you an F!" YEAH THAT'S RIGHT! Professors do indeed SUCK. They're just pi$$ed 'cause they have to stand in front of a bunch of kids and lecture, because their real hope is to work with people their own age.

Prestigious? Judges, City Managers, CEOs, etc. You know it.
