What do you think my chances are?

i want to hear from people with similar academic and/or social backgrounds as me...

i am a student at gavilan community college (gilroy, CA) who will be applying to UCLA and UC Berkeley (as well as some backups) next spring.

i know this might seem premature, but i am craving advice from people that have been accepted to (or are applying to) either of these schools. and now for a little background...

i am 21 years old. i graduated high school 'legitimately' (no GED) in three years. that was a while ago. i guess i had just turned 17 when i finished. i was modeling at the time, so i traveled and worked for the next 3 years. when i came home for a 'visit' at age 20, i decided that i wanted to go to college, as i have always wanted to be a physician with a specialty in infectious disease (mostly HIV/AIDS). so i enrolled in my local community college with a plan to transfer as a junior.

i fell in love with school right away. currently, my plan is to transfer to either UCLA or Berkeley. although i want to go to johns hopkins, i simply can't afford a great education that is 'non-UC'.

although i ultimately want to go to medical school, i have decided to apply to both of these schools as an anthropology major (with a psychocultural and medical subconcentration) for a BS, not a BA. at UCLA, the admit rate for an anthropology BS is 65% with an average GPA of 3.5. apparently, medical schools nowadays are looking for NON-bio majors, too.

perhaps i am being overly cautious, but i want your opinions on my chances.

gpa: 3.7 (average/17 unit semesters)
essay: i have five that i must choose from! i think it will be excellent...
extra curricular: student body VP, volunteer at the south county collaborative health and nutrition committee, HEADED a project for the above organization on local childhood obesity, designs t-shirts for bloodisthenewblack.com, was a member of my performing arts school's advanced choirs.
awards, honors: we don't have many 'honors' at my school, except for dean's list and the president's list, both of which i am on. when i was 16, i won the "young jazz singers international" award and performed a solo song in carnegie hall with phil mattson. i am also a member of my schools only honor society. i have had my essays published in various 'youth' magazines. i have been in some commercials, etc. produced CDS. the usually creative stuff...

yes...it all looks good on paper (i think). BUT....my most brilliant friend didn't get into UCLA, and he is now one of the head writers for rolling stone magazine. then again, i hear you have a great advantage if you transfer in as a junior, whereas he applied as a freshman with no extracurricular activities...

sorry if this is obnoxious...i keep having nightmares about ONLY getting into UC merced. the compulsive workers on here will get this...

also, i am 'SUPER WHITE', but not really....i am 25% spanish, but i don't think that helps me in any way.

thoughts?

(sorry if this is sloppy - i have had a few beers. tomorrow will be the first time i don't have to get up before 6am since FOREVER).

FIRST OFF, you designed for bloodisthenewblack?!
I like to say… freakin awesome of you.
i own a couple of tees…

but anyways…
welllll…
can’t for sure say about chancing you…
we don’t know if you completed all of your pre-reqs…

since anthropology b.s/b.a majors are not impacted.
with your gpa and ec and all. it seems like you have a great shot…
BUT!
hopefully that you have completed all of your pre-reqs with As, at most with one B…

if you have done so…

seriously, don’t sweat it…
i believe that you’ll get in with no problem.

your e.c are pretty impressive.
hopefully you filtered down towards that imply with your major
nothing with the entertainment industry…

but please reply regarding with your pre-reqs and grades…
those are the most crucial points in transferring… and for us to really ‘chance’ you…

And hook it up with a tee!!
haha jk.

best of luck though!

OMG! ha!

i have completed ‘MORE than’ the prerequisites i was supposed to…cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology, comparative religions, and linguistics.

but ■■■■ YOU KNOW ABOUT BLOODISTHENEWBLACK?

my new designs are coming out in the spring!!!

SO COOL.

also…i only got one B in any of my prerequisites…physical anthropology. even thought it’s basically my favorite, i had a “personal problem” at the end of the year and didn’t ace my final.

wafflemasher…impressive GPA! ****! can i say that on here??

dude, don’t worry about it.
i’m pretty sure you’ll get in…

man, how sick is it that you design for bloodisthenewblack.

update when you your designs come out.

i’ll probably buy some of your work!

again, best of luck with school and applications.

DUDE THANKS.

where do you go to school?

I went to santa monica college for a bit and ending up my last semester at Cerritos (OC area). I see that you go to a CC in Gilroy… hahah…
I’ve past there a couple of times heading to the bay area. Smells like garlic up in there.

no YOU smell like garlic up in EVERYWHERE.

see? i can be a psychotic workaholic AND be hilarious.

to my credit, however, i have lived in MANY big cities. also, i actually live in morgan hill, which is a mushroom-scented/snobby white people equivalent to gilroy.

WM…what about transferring to UC?

hahah. well, i’m waiting for UCLA notice to come by April (my ideal college)…
so far, i’ve been admitted to uci. hopefully by this monday i’ll know the rest of the UCs.

well i hope to see you there, then.

what are your ‘stats’?

yuppp, hopefully. =o)
i was always curious about the famous garlic icecream as well…
and living in a town with vast growing of mushrooms can’t be that bad.

mushrooms is pretty bomb on pizza with a a bottle of corona…
but anywayssssssssssssssssssssssssssss…

haha
well, my stats are:

applied: uci, david, berkeley, ucla, ucsb, and ucsd
gpa: as of Fall 08’: 3.88
major: communication studies (mass)/ film-media studies
pre reqs: all finished
school: smc/cerritos/ucla summer session program
e.c: internship with a film production company and entertainment marketing company, volunteered for afi and los angeles film festival, tutored little devils for 10 bucks an hour.
programs: honor’s program (tap), Berkeley (tap), deans list with honors

oh, hun…you’ll be fine.

You have a very competitive GPA to both UCLA and Cal. Anthro - BS is non-impacted as is Anthro - BA at UCLA. The average GPA for your major @ UCLA for 08 admits was 3.52, 26 of 40 applicants were admitted. You should be a shoe-in if you finished your IGETC, and Pre-Reqs for either school.

Here are a few things you might want to consider though:

Your current CC does not participate in the TAP program for UCLA, TAP students have a number of advantages when applying to UCLA ( such as being able to select a second major ). Have you considered looking into another local CC that is a participating member? [UCLA Undergrad Admissions: Transfer Alliance Program](UCLA Transfer Alliance Program | UCLA Undergraduate Admission)

Cal does not offer Anthro - B.S. only Anthro - B.A.

UCLA’s pre-reqs for Anthro - B.S. is rather comprehensive. I saw calc, chem, bio on that list to name a few.

Finally, I don’t think UCLA and Cal accept Spring transfers? Cal only accepts Fall applications for transfer students. I haven’t heard if UCLA does spring, but from what I’ve read L&S majors ( anthro falls in there ) is only offered during the Fall transfer period. HSSEAS @ UCLA is open during Winter transfer on a rolling basis.

That was great advice, but I’m not applying to Cal. I am applying to Berkeley and UCLA. Also, I am applying for the Fall. I just meant that I will be sending out my applications then.

Thanks!

LOL…your not applying to CAL??? then you don’t know very much about Berkeley…

and you can only send your app to UC in November…you may have it ready before then but you won’t be sending it anywhere yet.

First of all, I hate Gucci. Your CC name makes me vomit in my own mouth. The company is absolutely disgusting…do you have any idea what they do to animals?

Secondly, no. I assumed that CAL meant Cal State, which is a school that I have no interest in applying to.

Although I do not know the “slang” for Berkeley, or anything about their sports team (or whatever it is), I have the academic merits to be admitted there. I am also quite intimately acquainted with their Anthropology Staff. Those things, for me, are the things that matter.

And I’m sorry. I do, however, now know that Berkeley is referred to as “CAL”. So thank you.
