i want to hear from people with similar academic and/or social backgrounds as me...

i am a student at gavilan community college (gilroy, CA) who will be applying to UCLA and UC Berkeley (as well as some backups) next spring.

i know this might seem premature, but i am craving advice from people that have been accepted to (or are applying to) either of these schools. and now for a little background...

i am 21 years old. i graduated high school 'legitimately' (no GED) in three years. that was a while ago. i guess i had just turned 17 when i finished. i was modeling at the time, so i traveled and worked for the next 3 years. when i came home for a 'visit' at age 20, i decided that i wanted to go to college, as i have always wanted to be a physician with a specialty in infectious disease (mostly HIV/AIDS). so i enrolled in my local community college with a plan to transfer as a junior.

i fell in love with school right away. currently, my plan is to transfer to either UCLA or Berkeley. although i want to go to johns hopkins, i simply can't afford a great education that is 'non-UC'.

although i ultimately want to go to medical school, i have decided to apply to both of these schools as an anthropology major (with a psychocultural and medical subconcentration) for a BS, not a BA. at UCLA, the admit rate for an anthropology BS is 65% with an average GPA of 3.5. apparently, medical schools nowadays are looking for NON-bio majors, too.

perhaps i am being overly cautious, but i want your opinions on my chances.

gpa: 3.7 (average/17 unit semesters)
essay: i have five that i must choose from! i think it will be excellent...
extra curricular: student body VP, volunteer at the south county collaborative health and nutrition committee, HEADED a project for the above organization on local childhood obesity, designs t-shirts for bloodisthenewblack.com, was a member of my performing arts school's advanced choirs.
awards, honors: we don't have many 'honors' at my school, except for dean's list and the president's list, both of which i am on. when i was 16, i won the "young jazz singers international" award and performed a solo song in carnegie hall with phil mattson. i am also a member of my schools only honor society. i have had my essays published in various 'youth' magazines. i have been in some commercials, etc. produced CDS. the usually creative stuff...

yes...it all looks good on paper (i think). BUT....my most brilliant friend didn't get into UCLA, and he is now one of the head writers for rolling stone magazine. then again, i hear you have a great advantage if you transfer in as a junior, whereas he applied as a freshman with no extracurricular activities...

sorry if this is obnoxious...i keep having nightmares about ONLY getting into UC merced. the compulsive workers on here will get this...

also, i am 'SUPER WHITE', but not really....i am 25% spanish, but i don't think that helps me in any way.

thoughts?

(sorry if this is sloppy - i have had a few beers. tomorrow will be the first time i don't have to get up before 6am since FOREVER).
