What do you think of my prospective double major?

So, I'm going to be a junior this year and I'm trying to pick a major/double major. My thoughts so far are to double major in biology and english. I love both subjects and I'm actually pretty good at both. I'm having some trouble thinking of a lot of careers for that combines both but one I really like is being a wildlife research journalist or something along those lines. There's also the thought of graduate school which I would be going for in biology. So any thoughts or suggestions? I've already been bombarded with the "reality" of double majoring especially in majors as different as these two, so please keep any comments like that short :) Thanks, guys :)

Writing biology textbooks! :p

You already know the realities, and one is cost. Keep your biology major, and make your English major into a minor. Reason being is that biology is something you need to MAJOR in to get the content and experiences of science.

English, on the other hand, is something that a combination of 1) natural talent in writing, 2) a minor (i.e., 5 or 6 classes of 300/400 level, and 3) biology experience (i.e., lab reports, abstracts, research, etc) will suffice.

The choice is yours, and you can go far with either degree if you work hard. But the biology degree will do more for you than the English degree, when all you need to be excellent in your writing is the talent, the minor, and scientific writing experience through your science coursework.

If neither time nor money are objects, go for the double major, but know that “British Literature,” “Contemporary Poetry,” and “Advanced Linguistics” may be required at some schools, and may not align with your English content goals. Lean towards “Advanced Rhetoric,” “Contemporary Journalism,” and “Intermediate Scientific Writing”-type courses.

Hm, on further thought: are you interested in writing in English? Or just the language in general? You might like linguistics, which ties in nicely with biology/anatomy, and which lends itself well to a career in speech therapy or audiology.

And to add to what ScienceTchr said, since you didn’t mention it yourself, be aware that many premeds who fail to get into med school will also be competing for spots in PhD programs, so you’ll likely want to at least major in bio to have the best possible chance of getting into a graduate program.

Well I was thinking of maybe doing professional writing even though my real passion in english falls under creative writing/literature. I think I would benefit more from professional than the other two but still be able to have components of them within my major. As far as med school, I’m not interested too much in the medical field. I have thought of large animal clinical studies and if i end up wanting to do that then biology would definitely be my one or only major.
