What do you think??

School just ended last week, so I am officially a senior. I just finished my junior year of high school. I'll be applying next year to UW.

As of right now I will have a 3.09 UW GPA. Yes, I know...I screwed up.

Freshman year:

English: A/A
Algebra I: B/B-
Spanish I: A-/B+
Physical Sci: A-/B
World Studies: A/A-
Life Issues: A- (one semester)
Keyboarding: A- (one semester)
Comm Tech: A- (one semester)

*Note: First semester/second semester

GPA after freshman year: 3.5

Sophomore year:

Amer. Studies (Honors): A-/B
English (Honors): A-/B
Geometry: A/B
Spanish II: B/B
Business I: A/B
Biology: A-/B

GPA after sophomore year: 3.49

Junior year: (this is where I mess up...)

AP Jr. Eng: C-/B-
AP Psych: C+/B
Honors Chem: B+/C
Business II:B/A-
Spanish III: D+/C- :[
Algebra II: D/D :[

GPA after junior year: 3.09

So I obviously have a downward trend. I slacked this year in high school, and I really regret it. There were some issues at home I had no control over, but I should have focused more on my grades (write that in admissions essay?). My Spanish and Algebra grades killed me.

Here is my class load for next year:

AP Lit
AP Gov
Spanish IV
Pre-Calculus
Business III
Personal Finance/Ceramics (I have to fulfill a stupid art credit...)

SAT: CR: 600
M: 440
W: 540
Total:1580
*I'm going to study during the summer and retake it in September. I really think I can obtain an 1800+. I did not study at all the first time I took it...

ACT: unknown
*Took it last week and I should get the scores on Wednesday. I'm hoping for a 28 or 29.

I am very involved in DECA (business organization), and I went to STATE in competition.

I love running. I do track and cross country. Lettered in both this year.

I've lived all over the world (Panama, Turkey, Guam, Bahrain, Germany) because my dad is in the Air Force.

I have various community involvement experiences (church, camp counselor, soup kitchen volunteer, etc.).

I am working a full-time job this summer (5 days a week/8 hours a day) at McChord Air Force Base.

Also, I live in Washington (an hour away from the university).

The biggest thing bringing me down is my GPA. Will having strong grades my senior year mean anything to UW? (What if I pull a 3.8 my first semester of my senior year?)

Do I have a shot to be a Husky?

Thanks for taking your time to help me out! Your replies are appreciated.

Bumpity Bump!

Getting good grades senior year will do nothing but help your case. Try your hardest and get the best grades possible.

I don't think your SAT score is very competitive. As of this admissions cycle, UW does not look at the writing section, so focus on math and reading. I think you're going to need a 1200+ M/CR if you want to be competitive.

Your ECs look pretty good. If you have anything meaningful to say about your grades, then by all means write about it in your essay. Best of luck :]

Thanks, bro! I'm definitely taking the SAT again unless my ACT score is amazing. I should get my scores this Wednesday.

Anybody else's opinions??

Just a clarification of my last post..

I'm not totally sure whether they're using the writing section to determine admissions decisions or not. However, it is required either way. So for now, scratch my advise on focusing on M/CR and study hard for all three sections.

This year was a particularly difficult one for UW admissions, with many excellent applicants denied admission. I saw your post about U of Oregon, which mentioned finances. Be sure to apply to some other in-state schools where your GPA and test scores are in the middle of the accepted range, so you don't find yourself without an offer of admission from a school that you can afford. Your ECs look good. Put some time into writing a great essay -- that's something you can start on right now. Good luck!

Honest answer the math stuff will hurt your chances a lot. I had to do some begging to get someone off the waiting list at Western with slightly better numbers.

o boy... downward trend... I think for you to stand a chance, that SAT score has to be higher. Math > 600 at least

Yep. I'm taking that SAT score again and really focusing on the Math section. Thanks for all of your guys' feedback.

And UW superscores the SAT right?

You should take Algebra II over again during the summer. Otherwise, it is doubtful you will pass Pre-Calculus, much less get a good grade. Spanish has been trending downward from year to year. You should take a look at that to see if there is an underlying reason (eg. didn't memorize irregular verbs, don't understand the grammar, not enough practice speaking, etc.). If you don't want to do that, I would take something else and not further jeopardize your GPA.
