Its like the Dead Poets Society. If ur dad makes you get a practical degree even though you want to dance there is only one solution, dress up like Jesus and kill yourself…

…OF CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN!

Mom: “Do what you want. If you’re good at it, then work at it…whatever makes you happy.”

Dad: “You major is so useless and stupid!”

destiny, what is your major?

My parents are upset I don’t want to be a lawyer like my sister or pre-med like they both were.

I chose business instead, which in their opinion is a useless major.

Were your parents successful pre-meds (i.e. are they now medical doctors?)? Most pre-meds are unsuccessful at getting into any medical school.

^ Yes. My mom is a nurse and my dad used to be an EMT. I’ve always thought the pre-med path was interesting but I just don’t think I’m cut out for it. Besides I love my double major right now I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

My major is math/physics. My parents think it is as useless as a liberal arts degree in terms of job prospects and clearly do not approve.

Typical conversation about my studies between us:
Parents: So, let me get this straight, you plan to study the next 9-12 years just to earn 50K/year?
Me:…At least I am doing what I love? Money doesn’t buy happiness.
Parents: Why couldn’t you be like most intelligent kids and go to business school or medical school?

Business school? The only B-schools worth going to are those where you rub shoulders with rich and powerful people. Are your parents Ivy League snobs or something?

Intelligent kids go to business school???

Ya ok

…

Currently majoring in Economics and hoping to either become an Accountant or a Financial Analyst (I attend a liberal arts college, and unfortunately, we don’t have accounting as a major). Initially my parents were disappointed, probably because I was initially going to major in Computer Science which is more marketable I suppose, but I think they’re happy knowing that I’m doing something that I love, even if may not be making a humongous amount of money when I first leave college.

My mom thinks I should switch majors. My major is East Asian Studies. I’m not good at math or science, so anything in those areas are out of the question.

My mother didn’t care what I major in, she just wanted me to do what makes me happy.

That said, I think she’s glad that I’m mathematics/physics.

I’m majoring in advertising and my dad’s convinced I’m going to end up on the streets, but both my parents have the “It’s your life, do what you want with it” attitude towards it. They don’t pressure me (much) to change it.

Definitely took a lot of long talks with my parents to figure it out together. I respect my parents’ opinions. They were both immigrants to America and made it where they are now through education and a whole lot of informed foresight.

They strongly believe that the purpose of college is to be able to get a job after graduation. I agree to an extent.

Anyway, we recently came to a compromise and we’re all happy with the result. Although I won’t be studying philosophy or English in a classroom with a professor, there are plenty of open seminars and talks given around school - so I can still learn about the subjects that I love, while still obtaining the skills and degree I need to get a good job.

I’m a journalism major. I think my parents would rather have me go into medicine or engineering, but they can live with my major.

They only request that I get a Ph.D. (so I can teach at a college) or go to law school. I don’t have a problem with that.

My parents keep forgetting I am an English major. It is bizarre. I think they are sad I did not pick nursing, but at least I will have more leeway in career opportunities.

I’m a theater major. My mom’s fine with it, but my dad took more convincing. He says he’s come around to it now though.

I’m a history/anthro double major planning to specialize in archaeology. My mother certainly doesn’t approve, and I don’t know how many times I’ve been asked “What are you going to do with that?” It seems pretty clear cut to me: I’ going to become an archaeologist with my archaeology major. She’s also made jokes about how my major is “the major vapid girls take just so they can go to schools that have rich potential future husbands”

Luckily my dad, while wishing I was doing something more techie so I could geek out with him more, is pretty supportive. And he has all the money, since oddly enough my mom’s two separate masters (EE and Comp Sci) didn’t work out for her and she is now completely dependent on her 6 figure earning husband. Wait, where does this sound familiar?

My parents are happy that I’m happy. I’m going to end up with 2 bachelor’s degrees from two different schools anyway. Church Music from the school I’m in now, and Music Therapy from another school.

You can get a degree in Church Music?
