What does a 3 on an AP exam REALLY mean?

I know it says that a 3 means ure qualified but are u really?

Look at it in the context of the schools you plan to apply to, what subject it's in, and your other scores. 3s would be considered a "good" score and maybe even get you credit at some colleges (not highly selective colleges). If a 3 is your only score, that's probably worse than having a single 3 mixed in with a bunch of 4s and 5s. Similarly, if you claim to be a math person, a 3 in calculus would be a lot worse than a 3 in French Literature.

got a 3 in English Lit. and a 3 in Europ. History

A 3 wont kill you if you have say four 5's and a 4 to go along with it. But it usually means that you struggled on the exam. Dont worry I got a 3 on English Lang...

Yeah I got a 3 on European History during my sophomore year...I guess I really screwed up that test, because I felt like I knew (and still know) the material, but just didn't test well or whatever.

If you have another year or two of high school though, just study harder next year and you can really raise those AP scores. After a 3 on my only test sophomore year, I got 5, 5, 5, and 4 this year.

It depends on the institution.

At MIT, no comment.

At USC, you get full credit. This doesn't mean USC is bad, by the way, it just means that you get full credit with a 3 at USC.

At my college, only fours or fives get you credit. However, there are exceptions. If you get at least a three on the AP German exam, for instance, you get credit and upper placement in the language classes. If you get a three on another subject-- say, AP Euro History-- no such luck.

Well what I am saying is that with one 3 you wont get credit but it will not necessarily hurt colleges opinions of you if you have many other 4's and 5's.

It cracks me up how most of the people on this board think. At my school, it's uncommon for a person to get a 3 or higher. AP classes just aren't up to scratch, and we don't get much out of them. I got a 4 in Calculus last year and my teacher couldn't stop talking about it, and now my Stats teacher is excited because I got a 5 in that class. I thought it was quite funny, because I don't consider my scores very great, especially compared to the people on this board. So, in my school, a 3 is great! Now, try telling that to Harvard and they'll laugh you out of the place. Basically, if you think your scores will be a factor in admission, like they could be at a highly selective school, then you should really try to get the absolute highest score you can get, esp. 4's and 5's. If not, then it really doesn't matter what you get. If you want college credit, try to get what the school asks you to get. I, personally, am not using most of the credit I got anyway, so it doesn't really matter. AP's, for me, were mostly just an unnecessary hassle.

Unfortunately at my school a lot of kids will look down on you if you get a 3. Its just how it is. One of my friends called me a "failure" for getting a 3 on English Language and said that I "let the teacher down". While many kids get 3's at my school, its just not acceptable to many of my friends. Almost all of my AP classes had 90% or better pass rate so it is expected that we do well. Luckily for me I take more exams than most kids at my high school so one 3 is not that big of a deal for me.

Well here would be a typical reaction at my school:

"So what'd you get on your AP test??? I got a 5 and so did everyone I know!!!"
"I got a 3."
"Oh."
"Yep."
awkward awkward silence

LOL, I've heard that before. Poor 3...

:)

Wow, all I can say is wow. My school is definitely not like yours. I'm glad it's not, too.

I understand about being from a school where 3's are awesome..

I got a 3 in Euro..but thats cause that class was horrifying. i took it when i was a sophomore, and i wish i had never taken it.
I took APUSH and Language this year and they werent bad... but most people in my classes got 3's and were happy.. I felt bad telling em my scores (4 and 5) because they think Im a genius or something.. when obviously, compared to all you smarties, Im not.

It means that you are a terrible human being with no future.

It depends on the college your plan to enroll to; you may get credit or place in a high level. Will it help you in college admission? It also depends on the high school. Colleges like to know that the students are taking the most challenging courses. If your school is not a magnet or prep school, few 3 APs are probable very good grades. So don’t worry, just do the best you can.
