What does it take to become an instate resident at Georgia?

Did you get accepted EA to Georgia Tech?

Think of it this way: why should they cut their costs for you? Just because you want a discount?

Apply for some outside scholarships. Or look at these (and check deadlines. But many give preference to families with need, which you are apparently not) https://www.finaid.gatech.edu/scholarships When did you submit your application? Were you admitted or deferred? Or waiting for regular admission?

            If you have been accepted to GT and cannot afford it (because you are OOS) then hopefully you have a plan. Do you have any schools with tuition reciprocity from SD like WUE and MSEP? What is your financial situation? If you had been accepted to GT then one assumes you would be accepted to the eng schools in the reciprocity states, but that doesn't always mean much financial help. Have you applied to places where you can leverage your stats etc? Public state schools are usually skimpy on aid. Your ACT is pretty borderline for GT OOS so hopefully you have cast some kind of realistic net.

The OP said they could afford full pay. They just don’t want to pay it.

Why should the college make an exception for me? Well i’ve given back to all of my communities in significant ways and I personally believe (I hope at the very least) to make big contributions to the major I pursue at Georgia. With that being said I am going to be applying for every scholarship I can get.

To be fair nobody wants to pay the full tuition, the cheaper I get my education the better, I’m sure you would also agree? I wouldn’t expect instate just going into Georgia, I was wondering how I could get instate my second year going in there if that makes more sense. And it appears I would have to marry someone from georgia to get instate tuition (and that isn’t happening hahaha)! So what scholarships would be best for getting a cheap tuition at GT? Thanks for the replies!!

You can look for cheap but when you try something illegal you will pay an even higher price. You are not as “special” as you think.

What’s your net cost at Georgia Tech? Will your parents pay it? Some families have EFCs that make them full pay, but they can’t or won’t spend the money. You’re unlikely to find scholarships that are large enough to make a dent in OOS tuition. I think the deadlines for all the big ones have passed. If your family’s budget is less than the net cost of GT, you may have to choose a different school.

@TomSrOfBoston I don’t believe I said I was going to do something illegal nor do I believe I insinuated that. Either way I don’t believe I am “special”, I never even said that I was “special”: so I’m not sure where you got that Idea. Just to be clear to everybody I am not going to be doing anything illegal, I just want the cheapest way into college, as I am sure most of you would want the same.

Right now, all we know is from your chance thread. Lots and lots of kids tutor. And for engineering, have math-sci ECs and sometimes, engineering experiences outside the hs. You believe you can make big contributions, but others have done more. Including plenty of legit GA residents.

Of course, many kids/families don’t want to pay full freight to an out of state university. They go to their own best in-state publics. (Or those in adjoining states, when there are regional deals.) They make wise, informed decisions.

You’ve gotten the explanations now, from many knowledgeable posters, even quotes or links. Now it’s up to you to process the reality. Read the info. It’s there. And apply some common sense. Just owning a home there and “claiming” they live there is not enough.

FA officials and U policy makers didn’t fall off the truck yesterday. Your parents don’t live there, work there, pay taxes there, have drivers licences there and more. And not for twelve months before you start. We wrote it, now you have to process it.

Posters have given you plenty of links to scholarships. However, most of the deadlines have passed. You are correct to move on from thinking the school will accept a request for an appeal for instate tuition. You have not answered, so please do so we have a better picture- when did you submit your application? Have you been accepted? Being a URM from ND may be a hook, but you haven’t let us know if you were admitted, deferred or waiting for RD. It makes a difference.

GT gives few scholarships. GT is not generous in financial aid or scholorships. To be blunt you have zero chance of obtaining georgia residency as a second year or fifth year. One thing you do need to be aware of is oncampus housing is tight after freshman year and rent off campus is very high.

This may be a good thread to ask this question then… my sister who lives in NC told me (I live in GA) that GA Tech will charge her daughter (accepted EA) in state tuition after the first year of paying OOS tuition. No scholarship, but this is the “word on the street” in NC? Huh? I can’t find it anywhere on their website and told her there were “limited, competitive” OOS waivers after the first year, but only for the top 1% or so. Does anyone have any info beyond what’s on the website?

@jym626 I applied with RD but I haven’t got the decision (good chance but as always no guarantees) but one of my other fallback colleges is in Georgia if that makes sense. But don’t base your chance of me getting in on my chances post, I didn’t put down a lot of details like my volunteer work, being multilingual, personal training, being the first student to successfully test out of biology in my schools 56 year history, graduating early taking all but 2 AP classes from my school and being #1 (though GT doesn’t look at rank) in my class on top of all of this being an AA/MEA (middle eastern american) in a slightly racially challenged undiverse environment. For being in South Dakota I did what I could with the opportunity offered here.

Also thanks for the insight I’ve looked into scholarships. And one last thing just because my parents could pay/help pay for college doesn’t mean I by any means am rich, I do come from immigrant parents.

Some people at tech do nrotc. Some kids get coops or internships however opportunities depend on major but that generally delays graduation and you need a car generally to get to work. And GT is notoriously difficult to graduate in four years.

@Jimbobjim, What do you mean by your parents “could pay/help pay” for college? That phrase concerns me. Have you asked your parents how much they can pay per year? You can only borrow ~$5500/year. If your parents can’t pay the majority of the costs, you need merit aid directly from the school. Find out your budget if you don’t know it already and start running the Net Price Calculators for the schools on your list.

@snorkelmom,

Show this to your sister. It is highly unlikely that your niece will receive in-state tuition unless your sister and the family plans on moving to Georgia for a job move

@austinmshauri They could pay for the college without too much trouble I would just prefer that I pay more for my college than they do. I wouldn’t like to be too much of a burden on my parents.

If you don’t want the cost to be too much of a financial burden on your parents, then choose a less expensive school.

Read the link in post 36 which outlines the way an OOS can become income in-state. If your parents are ok paying OOS for 4 years, then it is all good. Otherwise, please have an affordable option that you can attend.

@snorkelmom

Word on the street is worth the paper it is written on.
