what does it take to get into Medill School of Journalism

Skillz. Nah, I don't know. I'll be applying there next fall, so good luck to both of us. I'm hoping my high CR and W scores on the SAT, high grades + rec in a unique English course as well as excellent essays will prove my worth as a writer. Combined with an overall decent academic/EC record, I think I have a shot.

I don't know if this helps, but I just got into Medill this year, and am going to NU next year.

I got a 2170 on my SATs, had some pretty good SAT II scores (780-US, 740-Lit, 700-French), some solid APs, and a lot of ECs. I'm not quite sure what did it honestly, but I would try my hardest on the essay and definitely schedule an alumni interview. Plus, I'm sure that they don't want all people from the same school going, and we've only ever had 1 person go to NU from my school, so that might be a factor. Hope that this helped!

We never had anyone from my school even apply, and my friend and I both got into Medill this year. She got in early, I was regular.

SAT: 800/760/720 for me.
We both were editors-in-chief together on our newspaper. I think journalism stuff helps.

I did an interview and it went well. I lucked out though, and actually knew the alumni through a tennis tournament I ran. Probably helped.

Good luck!

You definitely don't need to be editor-in-chief for a year or two, but dedication to writing-intensive activities do help for sure. Try to stress that you desire to have a liberal arts education without the liberal arts college makes NU a perfect match because Medill always talks about how important it is to be well-versed in a wide variety of subjects. You don't have to be exceptionally strong in CR or W for SATs (especially since my CR score was 100 pts lower than either my math and writing). Most importantly, just be enthused and convey that enthusiasm to the ad-com in subtle ways.

Good luck!

PS - drflet11 and brighteyesjl1: I can't wait to get to Medill. Maybe we'll get to know each other well. After all, there will only be about 170 freshmen.

I will be attending Medill in the fall. My stats are:

SATI: 800/690/730 CR/M/W

SATII: 790/730 US/Lit

APs: 5/4/4 USH/Bio/Comp

NMSQwhatever qualifier

Editor-in-chief of school newspaper, for 2 years

Summer internship at New York City newspaper

Published articles online at humor sites, &c.

Weighted GPA: 4.3ish

Varsity Fencer

National Latin Exam Magna Cum whatever x3

Wrote essay about how ninja take the road less travelled

Good interview, I think

that's good for me, actually. my senior class at hs is max 160.

4.1 weighted GPA (much worse than I could have done but Senioritis bit at the tender age of 14)
2190 SAT 780 M 710 V 700 W - all were much lower than I expected but I never went back to retake them
8 APs (2 Maths, 2 History, 2 Sciences, 1 Lit)
Excelled in Latin (on the NLE stuff, anyways)
Student Council
Part of Plan Committee, NHS Induction Committee organizer, Math Team, Academic Team, Involved in Beta Club heavily (because nobody else cares about Beta Club after 9th grade), National Merit stuff, and the usual (President's List, Random awards here and there).

And I got waitlisted and (somehow) got in to Medill with some underwhelming essays, in my opinion. No newspaper involvement (we don't have one because the lack of interest) but I was involved with the annual Literary Magazine.
