What does it take to transfer to Harvard after freshman year?

A miracle.

I can imagine it being quite difficult this coming year. A few years ago, up to 70 a year were accepted out of about 1000+ applicants. After the recent reinstatement of the transfer program, the admissions office has decreased their target number considerably. The estimated number this year will be about a dozen or so out of an applicant pool of similar size (i.e. 800-1200 or so applicants).

In any case, a really compelling reason to leave your current academic program (i.e. what does Harvard offer that your current instution does not) and an excellent freshman/sophomore year record with a rigourous courseload would be a start.

Significantly more than it takes to get accepted as a freshman in the first place.

This,

that, and maybe some of this too.

Fantastic post ksarmand - made me laugh :D

Great thread.

I remember that The Crimson had an article in 2007 about a student at Bunker Hill CC who overcame poverty, drug addiction, homelessness, and single motherhood and earned a 4.0 while advocating in various volunteer positions - and she was initially waitlisted. At around (or perhaps the exact) same time, they admitted the notorious cheat Adam Wheeler. It’s hard to put faith in the admissions process.

Transfer = enter 2015 NEXT fall, or reapply?

Last year’s transfer admission rate was under 3%.

So a transfer applicant would be entering Harvard as a sophomore (2015), or as a freshman (2016)?

As a sophomore.

I know of a transfer who came from a tiny rustic college of about 15 students, and seemed to have had led a life similar to that of Thoreau by the Walden pond.

@Polyglot: I’m assuming you’re talking about Deep Springs College. The school has very good relations with the Harvard Admissions Department and historically, DSC alum regularly enter Harvard (and Yale, UChi, Columbia among others) as transfer students. DSC alum also go on to be Rhodes/Marhsall Scholars, successful academics, industry leaders etc at probably a even higher rate than the average Harvard pool. It’s not just any old random tiny rustic college…

Since there are so many transfer threads popping up this has very much peeked my curiosity. Does anyone have data or knows where to find data on the transfer profile of Harvard such as what institutions they hailed from? Deep Springs College is indeed an extremely special case, not an ordinary college by any means so it is very probable that most transfer come from places such as DSC but does anyone have any other information?

^ I can’t find anything other than this Crimson article that mentions some big names, including Deep Springs.

WindCloud, he didn’t mention the name, so I didn’t know that. But I suppose this helps in answering the OP’s question.
