What does Maccalester look at?

I am a potential international student from Singapore. Am hoping that someone can give me an 'insight' into the admissions criteria of Macalester namely what components of a student application do they focus more on.
Also, how competitive is it for international students to get Financial Aid from Macalester. Thanks!

Hey LJL,

From the prospectus: What are we looking for?
1) Academic Promise
High school record, standardized testing, recommendations, application essays or additional material - all to understand a)academic interests, b)curiosity c)motivation

2) Contributions to Community
Recommendations, interview and essays - to consider potential for contributing to life beyond the classroom.

Keep in mind that Mac values Internationalism (here you have an advantage), Multiculturalism (here too.) and service. :)

I'm also a Singaporean student - got accepted into the class of 2009. I'll be glad to answer any questions! :)

Thanks Nanaa,
Am definitely applying to Mac and hope I get in. My scores are like V720 M670 WR610, the maths and the writing are a big concern! Dont really have a spectacular CCA record; played competitive sports and all that but never got any awards or leadership positions. However I have alot of work experience. Does that count? And tell me more about the Singaporean community in Mac too.

haha well you'd have to wait for a while before I can tell you anything about the Singaporean community in Mac, since I haven't really begun my studies there yet. But from what I already know, it's a pretty small community - maybe about 3 students? There's an Asian Student Alliance though...

Hm, if the writing and the maths are a big concern, why don't you try retaking it?

I think Mac will be looking beyond leadership positions or whatnot to see what kind of Person you are, and what you can offer to the College. Work experience will be good - depending on what it says about you (motivations, values etc.). Perhaps they will want to see if your values are similar to the College's ones.
