I know they want to see applicants be very interested in International Relations.

Do I need to have many activities that reflect my interest?

hellUVAchance: Model UN is definitely a phenomenal way to showcase an interest in IR – the leadership positions associated thereof demonstrate that an applicant has gone above the standard role in the club and has actively tried to be a leader of IR. If your main essay has an undertone of internationalism/interconnectedness of the world then that’s also definitely a plus. Then again, admissions is a very tough subject about which to say anything with certainty – plus, available activities are totally subjective to the applicant’s location and access. Effort is most likely the key – an effort to get involved.

jeffc - thanks for your response. I am a member of my school’s Model UN and I am glad to see your comment address the subjectivity of certain activities based upon location.

^Model UN alone won’t get you in. Winning the gavel repeatedly, excelling at the college conferences (winning outstanding delegate at the UChicago conference, for instance), and showing incredibly in-depth knowledge of two or three countries will be a huge plus in your favor.

If my school didn’t have a Model UN until the middle of my senior year will it look bad that I didn’t bother to create one earlier? Will it look bad that I didn’t join it after it was created (I wanted to so badly, but it meets on Tuesdays like 3 of my other clubs that I was already juggling…).

What about being president of the International Student Organization (1 year, my senior year).

What about being secretary/clerk of a 501(c)(3) that helps people in Kenya? I was hoping that would be a big advantage for me. I am not in Model UN, but my school does have the club. My friend will be president next year, our senior year, and is trying to get me to join.

so jealous of your opportunities @djz750 & ss3948
