My interviewer sent me a nice note about my ablities and how he would love to see me next fall there
does everybody get one?

well, i haven’t even HAD any of my interviews yet, but…
last year, lots of people got things like letters and hand-written postcards, and no, they don’t really mean much. maybe in certain cases, but for the vast majority i’m quite sure they’re just trying to get you to finish your app and send it in. don’t look into it too much good luck!

It means that the person who interviewed you is thoughtful enough to follow up a personal meeting with a written note, similar to the thank you notes that you follow up with after your interview. It’s a matter of social custom. Some interviewers do it, some don’t. I think it’s a matter of style (and time) more than anything. I really don’t think it’s flattery intended to get you to apply or anything other than simple, good manners; which, as a parent, means a lot to me.
