What does "threshold" mean?

Hello, I’m looking at SJSU’s design program, and it said the GPA requirement is a 3.7, and they had a “threshold” of a 2.7
My GPA will be around 2.6, with their .2 GPA bump, I should be in the 2.9 range (MAYBE 3.0 if lucky).

My grades haven’t been the strongest, but in the past 2-3 semesters I’ve been dominantly A’s.
(Fall semester, 2 A’s, 2 B’s. Winter, 1 A. Spring (now) I have a solid A, and VERY close to an A in another class, so potentially a B).
I’m really hoping they take the upward trend as a signifier that my GPA doesn’t really take into account my ability. My GPA stretches as far back as 2010, when I wasn’t taking school seriously, and instead opted to work.

This went off topic, so back on topic, what does the “threshold” of 2.7 mean?

i would take threshold to mean that they would not be considering applications where GPA falls under the 2.7 range. is the cutoff after the .2 bump or before the .2 bump?

So the .2 gpa is added regardless for all local students (in the san jose area). My 2.7 (or possible 2.66, but I’ve been told they “round up”, in my case to a potential 2.7) is BEFORE the .2 GPA is added. IF I muster a round up of a 2.7, my GPA would likely be a 2.9.

I don’t believe the threshold has a bias to before a 2.7 or after, just that its a “threshold” of 2.7.

If a student has a 2.5, the .2 bump brings them to a 2.7. A 2.0 student is a 2.2 etc.

Does that make answer the question?

I just want to know if I still have a fighting shot of getting in with a 2.7-2.9, even if the GPA is a ridiculous 3.7.

I’m thinking of playing a bit of kiss ass with some professors over Linkedin, perhaps if they like me, and I like their work, they might be able to vouch for me when it comes to applications (there is NO portfolio requirement). But I’d only do that if there was actually a professor I admire, not just do it to get into the school.

But yes, my guesstimating would conclude that the “threshold” is a 2.7 to be considered for the department. Just wanted possible validation.

I’m going to wing it, even if I don’t have a 2.7…You never know, right? They might admire the audacity. My sister got into SFSU when the req. was 3.0, and she had a 2.6/7…I know, not a stark 10 point difference, but you get the idea.

Are you a transfer applicant?

http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/impactionresultstransfer/index.html (from http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/ ) says that the prior college GPA for transfer admission to SJSU for fall 2018 was:

2.00 for design studies
3.70 for industrial design

It means that if an applicant with a 2.7 college GPA and the needed course requirements applied to SJSU for fall 2018, s/he would have been admitted if s/he applied for design studies, but not if s/he applied for industrial design.

Changing student interest in different majors may result in different GPAs for transfer admission for fall 2019.

Where is the reference to a “2.7 threshold”?

Threshold = minimum

interesting, last fall it stated 2.7 (I recall looking it over multiple times, so I knew I wasn’t confused)…

Well, scratch SJSU off my list. Looks like my chances of getting in just about anywhere are slim to none.

ExcitedToBeLetDown.

“find what you love to do” they say…“You must have a higher GPA than most med- students” they didn’t say.

Talk to admissions. They may overlook grades from 2010 and focus on what you’ve done more recently.

I’ll give it a shot, but it’s silicon valley. Students here are very intelligent. Doubt SJSU would waste their time. Kids with 3.6’s probably don’t get in, doubt they’ll look at a lowly barely 2.5/2.6 student.

Bummer is they want zero letters of rec. Zero personal essays, zero “explain why your GPA is such trash”…Either you’re physicist status, or bust.

But like I said. I’ll try.

I’m not sure where you will find a med student with a GPA at 2.6. You need to own your GPA. Work to get it up, and establish a strong record, perhaps in CC or OOS, establish a strong GPA and look at transferring in.

I am in CC. Last semester coming up.
I never said a med student has a 2.6. I said that a 3.6+ is typically medical school/Law school level requirements.
SJSU needs to up their game and start requiring portfolios, because this is just ridiculous.
I’ve seen some people who get into their program, 4.0 students…They can’t draw a straight line to save their lives.

someguy, I think that submitting an application to SJSU will be worth a shot, even if you’re at the edge of their minimum. If you don’t apply, you’ll always scratch your head wondering, “what if…?”

Additionally, while there is no place on the application to add in additional information to point out your upward trend,
there IS a spot called ‘Supporting Information’ where you can add in some of your achievements and/or proficiencies
within the design area.

Which other schools are you considering and for which semester/quarter?
Other CSU schools with solid design include CSUF, Sacramento, SFSU, CSUN, CSU Long Beach, SDSU, Cal Poly Pomona, East Bay and Fresno. Although the others are good, SJSU really does have the best program.

Private schools in California with good graphic design programs include CCA, Cal Arts, Art Center and Woodbury.

Good luck.
