What does USC most commonly refer to?

The University of South Carolina was founded before California was a state.

The colors are garnet and black, not red, not maroon, garnet.

To people hating on the South and South Carolina in particular, don’t waste your breath.

the south is pretty sweet

= maroon .

I usually hear it in reference to University of So Cal. In fact i never hear anything about South Carolina

Those are easier, though, because you can differentiate by saying UT-Austin or UT-Knoxville. Although, as a Texan going to a school in TN, there have been multiple times where I said one and my listener thought the other, depending on where they’re from. (It doesn’t help that both are orange…)
On the other hand, no one says USC-L.A. or USC-Columbia.

But yes, I always assume USC means Southern Cal unless otherwise specified.

More to the point, both Texas and Tennessee go by Texas and Tennessee for the most part, not UT or UT-[insertcity]. Just like Michigan isn’t UMAA.

As an aside, gotta love the use of “Southern Cal” in here when their media guide specifically says not to call them that. Directional school ftmfw.

^Eh I have a lot of friends that go to UT (Austin) and they never say “I got in/am going to Texas!” They always say UT. I’m not sure about Tennessee. Semantics, though.

Not in Tennessee they don’t. Whenever someone is referring to the schools themselves, we always say UTK or UT-Knoxville to differentiate them from UT-Martin and UT-Chattanooga. When you’re talking football, UT or Tennessee will do. Whenever someone talks about university of Texas, we say Texas or UT-Austin, or something along those lines. Just semantics though.

“To people hating on the South and South Carolina in particular, don’t waste your breath”

No one should dear to hate the North or South. Here we are just ONE!
North and South=USA.

South Carolina and California are beautiful states.

However, for practical reasons the suggestion stands as:
South Carolina [university] to change the name…to SCU, SC, or SCAR,
instead of referring to USC that stands for “University of Southern California”.

SCU already exists: Santa Clara University. You’d have the same problem all over again.

Greenery isn’t the first person to suggest that fix. It’ll never happen though. Since South Carolina existed before Southern California, South Carolinians will never stand for them being the one who has to change. History tells us that South Carolinians are pretty headstrong, so I don’t see that changing.
Also, Southern California refers to itself as SC too (see their baseball uniforms), so the confusion wouldn’t necessarily go away. As for SCAR, well, would you really want to go to a school that was named after a lingering wound? That one would NEVER happen. Would it be pronounced scar, or S-C-A-R, which is just way too long.

A lot of people refer to South Carolina as South Carolina, which seems like the most effective way to me. If you’re in a group of people who knows which one you’re referring to, use USC and no confusion is there. If not, be more specific. Problem solved.

University of Spoiled Children. Or University of Second Choice. Both of these are located in South Central Los Angeles (aka the most dangerous part of L.A.), and their mascot is a condom. Their school colors are mustard and ketchup.

I always think of South Carolina when someone says USC. However, if I watch a game with a SEC team I will obviously think of South Carolina.

I wonder whats up with all these name calling - University of Spoilt Children and etc.

Grow up already please!

That’s right…and counselors, admission officers and employers read these threads too.

Exactly. At school and with friends, USC is South Carolina and Southern Cal is Southern Cal. Amongst other people, I tell them I attend South Carolina.

Knights09-

I do believe you mean “THE” USC is South Carolina. At least until the “The” was painted over on the smokestack. Stupid lawsuit.

Don’t care if counselors and admission officers read this. I’m already in college.

Employers won’t care about this since it’s all part of a rivalry (anyone in the Los Angeles area will understand the rivalry so they won’t care that much as long as it doesn’t get too serious)
