What Does Your School's NHS Do?

Recently got elected to NHS cabinet. Turns out that my school’s NHS is kind of a joke, especially after it disappeared for the entirety of last year (after the advisor dropped the position like a hot potato as soon as he realized there was no pay raise involved.) I do want to make something out of it, however, especially since this year’s organizer seems committed to putting in effort for change.

So, to anyone out there who goes to a school with a legit NHS on campus - what does your NHS do? Socials? Volunteering? I honestly have no idea what NHS does. Any help will be super appreciated lol

I’m NHS moderator at my school.

Most of what we do is service, in two broad areas:

  • Academics. Each NHS member fills out a card listing their study hall periods, an ballpark average in major classes. Those cards are organized by period, then go to guidance, where any guidance counselor looking for a tutor for a kid can find one.
  • General school service. Each NHS member is expected to work 2 events (plus graduation for Juniors.) Those events include everything from Back to School night (helping parents find their way around) to ushering at plays/concerts to helping out at Open Houses and Career/College nights. We also have a group of kids that go to a local elementary school-- 2 NHS kids per day-- to help in the afterschool Homework room.

At Graduation, it’s All Hands on Deck for the Juniors. Some will help in setup, collating programs, making the corsage/boutineer that go onto each NHS blazer. A LOT go to the local college where we hold graduation and help with setting up the stage. Three different shifts will work the day of graduation, helping people find their seats, handing out programs, and helping load/unload the trucks to take all the stuff back to my school afterwards.

Mine at my old school did literally nothing. As long as you have your volunteering hours done each semester, you’re considered a member in “good-standing.”

However, at my new school they host fundraisers for charities such as selling t-shirts for cancer drives, etc.

Oh, and we get a NHS cord to wear during graduation.
