acm -- my D is in the same position as you are -- only she has been stuck on "completed preliminary review" since 12/19. they never requested her mid-year grades, but she submitted them both online and via fax. she did not receive any type of letter indicating that she did not receive one of the big scholarships either. i think that there are many applicants in the same position. she called the admissions office to make sure that everything was ok and they assured her that this is normal and that they had everything they needed for her. i guess we just wait -- very frustrating!

btw, do you live in nj or pa? seems like many applicants from that area are in the same boat.

My son's mid-year report was requested, message says "completed preliminary review" last updated 2/14. He has received no letter indicating scholarship satus. We live in North Carolina. I agree, the wait is long and frustrating.........

I got that letter in the mail saying I'm out of the running for the Trustee/Presidential scholarships.

I'm already in "we are currently reviewing your application" stage (after prelim).

They never requested grades by email / mail, but at the bottom of that letter I got that informed me about not being a Trustee/Presidential recipient, it said "and don't forget to send in your mid-year grades".

Does this mean I have to? 'Cause I really don't want to (I have one C in AP Calculus, 1 B in AP Chem and the rest A's in all AP's...potentially harmful?).

When I go to the status check, there isn't even that link to submit mid year grades anymore. All it says is "you should be notified by April 1st blah blah".

I live in NJ, and have been in completed prelim review since 12/19 too, i too just sent in grades and had them mailed to USC, and did not receive a letter either. Someone who goes to my school is in the same situation too I believe. Maybe it is a NJ/PA thing. I haven't been able to get through to Rakin Hall, so I don't know what's going but I'm just gonna wait and prolly mail a housing deposit to my second school in case I don't get accepted.

i guess ill just call? i dont want to hear someone tell me everythings normal with my application though because it obviously is not. my issue is that clearly my midyear grades were not recieved or my status would not be asking for them. but since they havent gotton them wheres my letter asking for me to submit them??? i just dont understand how i had my application sent by november 4th and am STILL at just preliminary review. its a little ridiculous.

Yea, I e-mailed Rakin Hall also and never received a response. I'm guessing he's just overloaded with apps right now or maybe someone else is in charge...who knows?

I got my letter today finally stating that I wasn't going to receive the presidential/trustee and I also got a letter stating they got my fin aid stuff and asking for me to send in extra forms. Finally some progress, now if I could just get a status change or at least talk to rakin.

so i call. lady says they have my midyear grades. i asked why my status was then still asking for me to send them and still had the link to the page where i can put them in. and heres the response i recieved.

well, they have your grades. everyones status probably says that.

BRILLANT!

so i ask is there someone else i can speak to about this who might know what the problem is (obviously this woman was not the brightest but i didnt feel like fighting with her)... and she suggests tech support. maybe im wrong but i dont think anyone at tech support knows a thing about my application. the tone of everything she said to me was basically shut up about your online status, your grades are here.

i just cannot understand why there is an online status check when its completely unreliable becuase i know im not alone in this. any suggestions???

ps. i also emailed the admission representative for my region of the us (the one including illinois) on january 29th with something that completely warranted a response and got nothing back. my guess is that email at usc is somewhat of a lost cause. the phone calls are great though, really.

did you try calling rakin hall? it seems like if you want to talk to someone thats the best way to go. idk if you only emailed or not, but that didnt work out so well for me either.

Yea I called several times about different issues and i think everytime their tone was attitude was pretty impatient. But it's the admission office, so I understand they're probably tired of answering the same dumb questions every year.

i think most people here need to take a chill pill. ok so the status page isn't updated the minute they start reviewing your application... it's ok. just know that we'll all get a decision by around April and that's all that really matters.

Right. Think about all of us poor souls from a couple of years ago who had NO status checks. Somehow, we survived. Try not to worry to much about what your status says- as long as they confirmed that they have your grades, there is nothing else you can do.

Got the no scholarship letter today, too, and the financial aid one last week.

No status change since 12/13, and the system doesn't reflect that mid-year grades were reported online and by the GC. We wish S had been admitted already, but really, guys, it's just how it works. Don't try to read anything into it. Other colleges my son has applied to either don't allow you to see any information about the status, or have a status check function that has missed a recommendation or some other piece of the application. You do your due diligence and move on; that includes taking the live person's word for it if he reassures you that the file is complete!

If I were a psychology student looking for a study to pursue, I would definitely consider a study of the relative effects of the "no information" vs. "lots of information" approaches colleges take. The TMI approach probably has some unintended consequences, based on how people are responding here.

I actually think these status checks are making things worse. I'd rather USC be like the other universities and just send out decisions on one day. It makes things less antsy.
