I'm currently filing out the academic history section of my college application. What does "Yr 4+ Lang other than English mean"? There are options from "Yr 1" to "Yr 4+". Do these different options mean the level of the course taken? For example, Yr 1 course is for students who are learning the language for the first time?

I’m guessing that means “Four or more years of a foreign language (like French, German, Spanish, etc.).” So I guess it’s asking you if you’ve taken a foreign language, As for the “Yr 1,” “Yr 2,” etc., it’s either referring to A. How many years you’ve taken it for, B. What years of high school you studied the language, or C. The level of proficiency you’ve reached. Someone might correct me, but I do think it’s C. So yes, Yr 1 is the most basic level, up to 4+ being the most advanced or an AP level class.

Talk to your guidance counselor. In general I’d say the school would like you to take 4 years of one (not native speaking) foreign language.

You don’t say what application you are talking about, and if one from a particular college, you best contact the college to determine. Usually when colleges ask for completed years of a foreign language, they are asking for level reached of a single language and not actual years taken (e.g., take high school level 3 and 4 in freshman and sophomore year of high school and you will have completed 4 years when answering the question you mention).
