What don't you like about UT Austin?

I think what matters is the dumb:dumb ratio really.

Oh yes, true. That would be a cool study. Who has a higher Dumb: Dumb Ratio; Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State ;-).

Everyone, just to let you know, there are a LOT of dumb people at Texas. A lot. There are also a lot of smart people who don't do their work.

But to answer the original question of the thread:
1. The homeless people. They are everywhere on the drag. The owner of Big Bite had to literally throw one out of the restaurant because he was being a nuisance inside the store.
2. The bicyclists. Particularly the ones who neglect traffic laws. This is probably just me, but I personally do everything I can to obstruct a bike rider who I see run a red light or stop sign, particularly when they get in pedestrians' ways.
3. The fact that our campus is built on a hill. It's really annoying when you have to hike up a hill to go to the gym.
4. The fact that it's a little to humid in September and April-May.
5. The fact that you can't find parking, and that UTPD love to give tickets.
6. The fact that if you live on campus, the dining halls close at 7 PM. And aren't open for dinner at all on Sunday. And that it all tastes the same.
7. The fact that of most sets of double doors only one will be open and the other will be bolted down.

As you can see, these really aren't major complaints at all. Really just pet peeves. UT is an awesome place, and I don't know anyone here that doesn't love it.

Just making a passing comment, but isn't it a bad thing that this thread is THIS long?

 1. Yeah the younger homeless peolple are annoying.
 2. I runs top signs if there is nobody coming, but running red lights on Guadalupe is a fast way to get you in an accident. If you started riding a bike, you would inevitably have to start running ****. 24th and speedway right after classes get out require you to disobey traffic laws pretty much.
 3. Hiking up a hill= ok but time consuming, biking up a hill= hellish nightmare. This probably my biggest complaint. I live at 24th and Lamar and my ride to campus is awful, and my ride back from campus is almost as bad. The highest point is around Guadalupe so end up going up hill atleast on part of the way back if you live in west campus.
 4. Its nothing compared to Houston, and not too bad on a bike. The weather this year, thus far, as been pretty amazingly good.
 5. Don't drive on campus.
 6. I remember that the Dining halls would close early, but Jester Pizza was open pretty late. Also there's always Wendy's.
 7. Never really encountered this, but if its to a building you frequent it could get annoying.

What kind of food do the dining halls have? I am a vegetarian so would there be many choices for me? Can you list some of the stuff they offer that I would be able to eat?

UT has as many options for vegetarians as most places.
Jester 2nd Floor and Kinsolving are the two All You Can Eat cafeterias.
You can see always see the current week's menu here: DHFS - Food Menus

You can use your dining dollars at the Littlefield Patio Cafe after 2. Littlefield Patio Cafe and Cypress Bend often have food that is really quite good. But they are not "all you can eat."

gstein, just as an aside - knowing your affiliation with A&M, you are not doing your university proud by coming on this website and trashing UT.

As a parent who's child is contemplating college choices next year, your behavior is extremely offputting, immature and ridiculous. If you are an example of the "typical Aggie", then what I've been told about their overall kindness and class is incorrect.

And: you claim to not be a troll - see if the definition (dictionary.com) fits:

Trashing UT? If you think any of my comments in this thread are really that "extremely offputting", then report them. I've seen many more occasions in this thread, and throughout this website and others, of Longhorns bashing Aggies and their institution than I have the other way around. Open your eyes. So yes, because I've made sarcastic comments let's completely dismiss A&M as an institution with kind dignified people, but all of the hate in this forum directed towards A&M shall go unnoticed because the sun sets burnt orange... and God loves UT. Please.

^^Yea I guess me giving you scholarship info and advice for your son, and not only that but admitting to you that UT is a great school and will give your son great opportunities, is classless. Please... that is something I rarely hear out of any longhorn speaking of A&M.

How about people stop being dicks to each other? That'd be cool...

Also, I'm also worried about managing time if I go to UT or A&M. My main priority will be doing well in school, but I also want to have time to party or goof around. How have you guys been able to manage having fun and learning?

One more thing: I did pretty well on math SAT's, but I know I'm behind most people who are taking Calculus in high school because I will be very lucky to get a 3 on the AB exam. It's probably because our girls' softball coach is also my calc teacher and the really smart people might get 4's at my school, but should I do some remedial work over the summer to catch up? Or do you think I"ll be alright if I just start out on K or the beginning courses elsewhere?

Sorry if this is too off-topic, but it feels like the discussion has turned that way -- and opinions of UT have been beaten to death.

Any advice on how can I get the University of Texas at Austin to match A&M University's scholarship offer?

notagain, i have no idea, but I would suggest you start a new thread with your request for advice.

There are really only two things that bug me about UT:

I don't like some of the drag rats. The ones that pester you for money or for your leftover food. You say no, but they insist and keep walking beside you asking for it. Annoying as can be.

The fact that there aren't enough outlets at the library (PCL) for everyone's laptop... it's hard enough to get one on a normal day, but good luck finding one around finals.

Other than that the school is great. Oh, and some of the people suck, but you get that everywhere....

That they take so long to tell the non-top 10%ers whether or not they're accepted.
I think that's why a smaller percentage of accepted non-top10% choose UT Austin - while they're waiting for the decision, they explore other schools.

That is exactly what happened with my oldest son. He was accepted everywhere else with the red carpet put out for him, and he was still waiting on UT. By the time he was finally accepted in April, he'd already decided that UT's loss was UF's gain.

He has LOVED being a Gator, wouldn't trade those 4 years for anything, so - there is happiness at schools other than Texas!

Of course, my 2nd son would disagree, being a Longhorn and all;)

lol @ theloneranger about the preponderance of "dumb people." That's why I'll be thrilled to be in Plan II if/when I decide to go to UT :D
