What don't you like about WM?

William and Mary is one of my top choices, if not my top choice, so I'm just wondering how students like the school. Is there anything you don't like about it? I don't mean to be negative, I'm just curious.

bad things about W&M:

parking

some dorms don’t have AC

some of the people who are in the library 24/7 are way too intense

the swamp pit behind Yates is gross

there aren’t a lot of off campus bars

there are some issues with fraternity housing

only 3 unrelated people are allowed to live together off campus

… i think these are the general negatives. Many of them are not unique to W&M (1, 2, 3, 6, possibly 5).

Really, the only concern is that we lost to ODU last night…

That, and parking :)

Not sure if this will apply to you, but as an out-of-state student from the far west, I would have preferred a more geographically diverse student body. Nothing against the quality or character of the in-state students, who are some of the brightest, worldly, and well-rounded that Virginia has to offer, but the mere fact that two-thirds of the student body was from one state (and with so many from NoVA) could make it feel a little provincial at times.

all the twamps.

…the fact that they gave me some dismal financial aid ^ ^
___

Is grade deflation a large problem?

There’s really no good way to measure that. Friends who have transferred say its harder to get good grades here, but they’re mostly from colleges you’d expect to be easier. It is definitely very difficult to get a 4.0 here, but getting a 3.0+ is not terribly difficult.

Also, the Green Leafe is the best bar in the world and it doesn’t matter that there aren’t many others.

Parking

On campus dining is mediocre. While the food isn’t great, the meal plans are far worse. You basically have to go all or nothing; the pricing discourages you from eating some meals on campus and some off campus.

Plenty to do on campus, but not too much to do off campus unless you venture outside of Williamsburg

A picturesque historic campus loses its magical feel after a while and you realize many buildings are just old and run down. That said, this is being countered somewhat by a construction spree (ISC, Miller Hall, Jamestown Dorms, Small Hall, and eventually Tucker).

More than half of freshmen will live in dorms without air conditioning. This doesn’t really matter after your freshman year though, as I think all but one upperclass dorm has AC, and even then it only really makes a difference for the first and last months of the school year.

Funding cuts have resulted in substantial tuition increases. The burden seems to be placed far more heavily on out-of-state students as it is the politically popular choice, despite the fact that in-state tuition isn’t too heavily subsidized by the state legislature anymore.

Campus is safe, but W&M cops are bored. This means they have little to do besides harass students for fun. Still, probably better than having an unsafe campus.

Did anyone mention parking issues?

I’m not really obsessed with the parking… But as a commuter student, parking can really irk you when everything else about the school is truly terrific

I am a day-student and I think that parking is really my only complaint about the place. It is really great. I am a senior and cannot wait to graduate, but I am going to miss it.

Oh, one more thing, they have now started to charge small annoying fees for things that I know from experience are free at other schools. This is the direct result of the economic stress, but things like transcripts should not cost $7.

^Well, you don’t really need those until you apply for grad school or are graduating (for your records) though, right?
