I am relatively new on here. My S is a junior and largely interested in engineering, with an interest in computer science and mathematics too. His stats are very strong: 225 PSAT, (just took SAT, but expect a 1550 CR and Math), #1 in his grade, all AP and honors classes. We are looking for an up-to-date list of strong schools where he has a chance at generous merit aid. He will not qualify for much need-based aid. Thank you!

I’m moving this to the College Search & Selection forum, you may also want to post on the Engineering Majors and Math/CS Majors forums.

I forgot to mention his GPA is 4.0 UW/6.0 weighted.

University of Maryland - College Park has generous merit aid, especially for engineering majors. His stats seem like they would put him in contention for the B/K scholarship which gives full cost of attendance or a substantial scholarship - depending on how they do in the competition. When my son applied, I was told that in order to get an invite for the B/K scholarship you needed to have a minimum of 1500. That was 4 years ago and it might be a bit more competitive today, but I would guess your son would still be in contention. If he doesn’t get the full cost of attendance scholarship, he would likely still receive quite a hefty scholarship. Additionally, they have MANY scholarships for engineering that they can apply for. UMD makes it easy for the engineering students to find these scholarships. Here is a link to freshman scholarships:

My son was in computer engineering and felt that it was a GREAT program; prepared him well for the work force; lots of internship opportunities; and the best part was there were many job offers!

He has a large selection of merit scholarships to choose from. Look for schools in these lists with the desired kind of engineering:

Depending on your price limit, there may be some schools with relatively low list prices that can be considered, even without scholarships, such as this list (however, these are tuition only costs; need to add room, board, books, etc. costs to get actual costs):

UMN-TC loves NMF and offer good scholarships to them. My D got near full oos tuition scholarships from them.

Cooper Union in NYC is highly regarded, and has a 50% tuition scholarship for all accepted students. Tuition is 40K.

You might want to look into Pitt - potential for good merit aid (10K-full tuition, 10-12 students chosen/yr for full ride), I have 2 in engineering there.

Take a look at the National Merit section. We were in your boat this time last year. S1 had a 230 PSAT and 1560 core SAT. He made NMF and that opens up a lot of aid. Odds are pretty good your child will be there too. It would all come down to what you consider a ‘strong’ school. S1 opted to go for a full-ride option for undergrad and worry about the ‘prestige’ or rigor with grad school. There are many solid schools that offer full rides or near full rides to NMF students (and those who have similar stats).

Amandakayak: I have heard Pitt. is good for merit. I kind of dropped the ball on U. of Pitt. and I don’t know why. We have family there and will be checking it out. Pittsburgh would be a great place to live and go to school.

Torveaux: Was this a state school your S received a full ride from? We are in NJ and anticipate a full ride offer from Rutgers, New Brunswick, which is a pretty good school. He likes Rutgers, however, to be honest, he wants a smaller and/ or more prestigious school. We just need an idea of what is out there. My definitition of strong is a research institute with a reputation that is better than Rutgers. Why pay for anything equal or less than a Rutgers education when he can get it for free? He got a 1520 core on his first SAT and will be taking them again May 3. I think 1550 and top 5% of your class gives you a full ride at Rutgers.
