What exactly is the HPME program?

I was just looking around on the Internet for colleges for premed, and I came across the HPME. I do not quite understand the advantage of doing such a program, when you are completely committed to the medical educational pathway. Can someone please explain?

Also is it possible to achieve full tuition for 7 years through this sort of a program, meaning medical school and premed is paid for?

The advantage is you have a guaranteed spot in their medical school (without having to take the MCAT) which is huge if you know you definitively want to attend medical school. It’s typically non-binding so you could attend a medical school elsewhere if you chose. See NU’s FAQ’s on their program.

http://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/AWOME/hpme/prospective-students/FAOs

There are few combined programs out there, some have MCAT reguirement, others do not, some are accelerated, others are not. Yes, they are all very different. One thing is common - they guarantee you a spot at Med. School, if you meet their UG’s requirements (college GPA, MCAT score-if required). Most of them are more selective than Ivy’s, some of them give preferences to in-state applicants. You have to research each one.
One thing to consider, it is easier to get into NwU Med. School (Feinberg) via regular route than into HPME. The same is applicable to some other combined programs (like PPSP at CWRU).
Med. Schools have very few Merit awards and none need based, only loans. Getting full tuition covered in UG portion of combined program (covered by UG) does not mean at all that your Med. School tuition will be covered by Med. School.
However, having spot at Med. School is a huge deal, so selectivity of these programs is thru the roof.

Advantages: 1. You are into a fine (Feinberg) medical school in the country 2. You are set on your medical profession 3. Last but not the least, you will have PEACE.

Disadvantage: None per say. or, just for the sake of it, you may miss out on getting into Harvard Med School from traditional pre-med track.

I am not certain it is possible to have tuition paid for all 7 years. If you qualify for financial aid, NU will cover your undergrad (you can stretch it out to 4 years I think) but medical school admission comes separately and you will have to find money for it.
