And how long did you do them for? Did you do any volunteer work? Personally, I really do not like many of the clubs at my school and I know extracurriculars are important...Is it too late to do them now (I'm a sophmore).

It’s never too late to try something new. I wish my school had a lot more clubs than it does as well. I have done a lot of volunteer work, over 350 hours. I am also in clubs, but I always wish there was more opportunity.

I’m a current early decision applicant. Main things I did/do are tennis, cross country, science fair, and jazz band. For volunteering I did something a bit less standard so it wouldn’t be relevant to talk about it.

It’s definitely not too late. I didn’t start my favorite extracurricular until the middle of sophomore year.

Varsity tennis (3 years) captain last year
Extensive guitar (electric and acoustic)
Very successful investor (doubled money twice + playing more conservative right now beating market by 5% consistently)
Biking
Many more but smaller

I did not do ANY EC’s my freshman year because I wanted to adjust to the school and get the hang of things. My grades were stellar and I managed to get a foundation for sophomore year when I started joining clubs.

Some EC’s I’m involved in:
–Orchestra (3 years, principal flutist)
–Spanish and National Honor Societies
–Rotary Interact
–Health Society (Officer)
–Jazz Band (Tenor, 2 years)
–Marching Band Assistant Drum Major
–Work (3 years, ranging from dog walker to ice cream scooper)
–Hospital Volunteer
–Shadowing

Hopefully those give you some idea of things you can choose from. Branch out and try something new!

If you don’t like the clubs at your school, start your own club!

I do the things I think are worthwhile and that keep my interest for more than a month or two. For example, I’m Editor-in-Chief of both the lit-arts mag and the student newspaper because I like writing and art. I’m extensively involved in the drama department as well because I’ve loved theatre since I was five. Other than that, everything I do is outside of school.

I have never been interested in doing community service with any of the groups at my school because I feel like they’re started only to pad college apps and they don’t do anything hands-on. If you live in a city, or even a suburb, there are probably hundreds of legitimate nonprofit organizations near you that need volunteers. Nonprofits can be started for tons of different reasons - I do some work for one that tries to make music more accessible at all age levels while supporting local musicians. It might seem like an unimportant cause, but since I’m very dedicated to arts education, I think it’s crucial for my city.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is start with your interests. If you like writing or photography, join the school newspaper or the yearbook. If animals really interest you, see if you can volunteer at a local zoo or humane society. Does that help?

-National Honor Society (1 year)
