What font/formatting is appropriate for the personal essay & supplements on the common app? I was thinking of deviating from times new roman 12pt, but will that look bad? Also, double or single space?

As long as it looks professional and won’t hurt their eyes after reading pages of it.
I just did Times New Roman, 12pt, double.

Anything that is standard (TNR, Arial) is fine. If the adcoms notice your font, you’ve done something wrong.

should it be double or single spaced?

B u m p .

I prefer single spacing.

Double spacing is for teachers who will put notes on school assignments.

what do you see more of? since there is nothing printed on the common app for preference, I cannot imagine a student would be penalized either way - or at least they shouldn’t - how do you feel about going over the 500 word ‘limit’.
