What goes on a counsellor's report?

So I’ve heard that beyond writing you a rec, your counsellor sends an additional form with information regarding her opinions on course rigor ect. Beyond that though what other information would be sent? Does he/she send your AP scores and SAT/ACT scores?

Note: we have naviance at our school (not sure how that works in conjunction to the common app though…)

Your guidance counselor is definitely the one who sends in all the scores and grades, but I am also not sure (and have always been curious) about what exactly is said on those extra forms they fill out. So scary!

So when you opt to not send a certain score would it be a possibility that your counsellor sends it anyways?

I think you would need to tell your counselor that you don’t want them sending those certain scores in. At least that’s what I plan on doing!

Check to see what the GC sends. In most cases, they have a common form to fill out and they also send the school profile report so the admissions office can learn info about your school: demographics, # of students in your class, if your school ranks, how many APs and honor classes are offered etc. Our high school GC did not send ACT/SAT/AP scores. Those need to come directly from the testing agency. GC also sends official transcript

A guidance counselor/school official will need to send the Secondary School Report to your colleges in which the GC will rate the rigor of your schedule and discuss any limitations set by the school/district. Here’s an example. Often, the school will send a school profile which will outline academic requirements and limitations, AP courses offered, college matriculations, GPA by decile, and a ton of other info. No. You are responsible for sending official score reports. However, your school may list these scores on your transcripts, which they may or may not delete upon request.

if you are really concerned or curious I recc reaching out to your guidance counselor and asked him or her exactly what they send to colleges. Most have summer office hours. That will eliminate any guesswork and hopefully ease your mind.

Go to the College Board site’s Professionals section and search for school report template and school report example. You’ll get a good sense from those.

Move if needed…
Tip: Each college you’re applying to might have different requirements about how you must send various test scores and DE transcripts. Will the college accept ACT and SAT I scores as reported on a HS transcript, others require the score report from the testing agency. The. SAT II , AP, and CLEP score reports are always (it seems) required from testing agency because they might be used to grant you credit rather than just placement. Do your DE credits come from your HS or DE course provider transcript? Double-check.

I go to a small magnet HS so counselor sends: explanation of our QPA system, how everything is an honors course, the limit to how many APs are available to us, why we don’t rank, etc.

Also-this probably doesnt happen in a big public school but we had to fill out a 2 page questionaire for our counselors about anything that may have been detrimental to our HS career, what we feel has been most important to us in HS, reflect on coming to my school, and so on-so I am assuming counselor writes a short blurb about students if needed.

^ @laughandlearn23 yes this also does happen in the big public high schools where students fill out a “brag sheet” or resume of sorts as well as answer questionnaire like you mention above.
