What happened to UCLA?

dont bother replying. youre blocked.

my point exactly - troll...

The vaunted SC networking is vastly over-rated and outside of Los Angeles & Orange Counties its value diminishes rapidly with distance.

In the past three decades, the student bodies have come to resemble each other more closely, alas: UCLA's has become more affluent, USC has tightened their academics, which used to be a joke and still are in many majors. USC has outstanding programs in Film/Television and Music; however, I think their undergrad business program is particularly weak...one of the my colleagues in the local homeowner's association teaches there and just shakes his head when talking about the students there.

As this is a UCLA thread, I'd recommend UCLA to a lot of people but it's not for everyone. The quarter system is very unforgiving and the administration is such that if you're not a self-directed persistant self-starter you will probably fall through the cracks...the counseling is such that you have to push for it, they won't come to you.

UCLA attracts at tremendous amount of grant money, ranking in the top three in the country depending on how you count, but this affects mainly the graduate students.
The presence of both Engineering school and hospital makes UCLA an attractive place for things like biomedical engineering and the newish engineering dean is shaking things up after a decade or so in the doldrums. In the Arts & Sciences areas, it depends on the major and what your particular interests are. In the Performing Arts, the Theater program is outstanding; I wouldn't go there for Dance. Music has some top people but overall I think USC's is more highly regarded.

Calidan, one reason that UCLA has so many posts in the old CC boards is that there was an student who worked in admissions handing out lots of free advice, most of it defensibly good. I don't know that he made the transition over here...I had more than 20,000 posts on the old board and have barely gotten my feet wet in the new system.

I wonder what happened to "Ucladmissions" from the old UCLA board... is that the person you were referring to, TheDad?

Flopsy, you're right, ULCAAdmissions is the poster I was thinking of...I had logged off before I remembered the handle. He (she? persona seemed male) had generally good advice if sometimes just a tad overly optimistic in my opinion...a tad. Some of the posts I really wanted to footnote.

There are some terrible spelling mistakes there.

Also, you guys need to stop bickering over LA and OC. The bigger picture is the bias against west coast schools in the US News Ranking. The BCS for the first time removed its bias against west coast schools for football this year. Lets do the same for US News next year.

thedad, who is that person you are talking about, the one in your homeowners association? i would like to meet him. what is his name?

Sorry, MTM. No dice. He works there.

coto is overrated and a poor example of oc life. for one, its 20 min from the freeway and anything civilized. if you want to look for affluence in oc, go to san juan's hunt club where the average home goes for about 7 million and they are spread out, rather than stacked on top of each other. or try san clemente's ocean view communities. coto is in the middle of nowhere with views of its own homes and horrible golf course. the majority of so cal residents didnt attend usc either. most went to cal poly slo, or some other school school with a great rep among business. for one perspective, my father went to cal state fullerton, owns this beautiful ocean view home on a two acre lot. my cousin, on the otherhand, who went to usc and is running a finance firm in san diego; his brother, a ucla grad, was so worn out last year that even after passing the mcats decided to take a year off. i would have to side with usc on any matter concerning sanity, but neither is better than the other. it all depends on the abilities and sacrifices each student is willing to make for success. college is overrated.

You guys do realize that the San Francisco Bay Area is the most affluent part of the nation. Although we are rich, we don't cheaply flaunt it. We are extremely liberal too, and we like to serve our communities unlike the callous, conservative people of O.C.

There's no smog here. Just the cool breeze of the bay. Our culture is much more refined, and we have the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco financial district, Silicon Valley, Stanford (the best university in America), Berkeley (the best public university in America), and UCSF (one of the best medical schools in the world). The only superstar college you guys have down there is Caltech. UCLA is Berkeley's abandoned child and USC is a joke.

Although you guys spawn famous movie stars like Michael Jackson and O.J. Simpson, we spawn Fortune 500 CEOs like Page and Brin of Google, Yang and Filo of Yahoo!, and the people of Sun Microsystems. Yeah that's right, we are HELLA cool. And richer too.

Don't forget Larry Ellison.

As much as I'd like to commend Rooster for his loyalty to the Bay Area, I am sure as many of you know, that attitude of superiority is not representative of the way the Bay Area thinks of LA and So Cal. The california lifestyle makes us all different from the rest of the country, and a lot of youngster's haven't traveled around the country to realize that yet.

Every Berkeley student/alumni and other Bay Area students/alumni I know are pushing for the USC game. USC may be one of our few chances to eliminate the bias against west coast schools and west coast things in general. Yes, what you see on television can't be vote fraud. How it happened twice in a month is amazing, but I digress...

I personally know many people who turned down full rides to ivies to go to USC and UCLA on full rides. After all, sometimes our parents want us to stay close to home. Sometimes I believe the most overlooked and underrated university is UCLA. There is a lot of hidden talent at that school. The hiring managers that bother to take the effort to find them are the ones who beat their competition from the beginning.

a little arrogant, arent you? besides, whens the last time we had a tv show about the bay area. just kidding, relax, take a breather before you overreact. i guess most of you are still missing the point: USC has better networking than ucla.

i especially liked that bit about ucla being berk's abandoned child. thats sure going to strike up an interesting discussion, especially in the ucla board.

"...Stanford (the best university in America), Berkeley (the best public university in America), and UCSF (one of the best medical schools in the world)."

Stanford is possibly the best school in the country, Berkeley is without a doubt the best public school in the US, and UCSF is one of the best med shcools in the world. I'll give you that much.

"The only superstar college you guys have down there is Caltech."

Anyone who has followed your posts knows that you know very little about schools. I really dont have to comment on your remarks becuase you are generally wrong anyway and people already know this. Didnt you say you didnt even know of USC until a year ago. That is quite telling dont you think? I doubt you have done much research on Colleges either or else you wouldnt continue making yourself look silly.

By the way, the internet you are on right now was invented at UCLA.

Factoid: the “Sun” in Sun Microsystems is an acronym. It stands for "Stanford University Network"

California as a state is great. Lets end it there.

^ Yes its a Friday. Look outside at the weather. Today seems like one of those days girls will be golden brown and playing easy to get. LOL!

sigh, wonder how many guys will use that pickup line... " I went to a California Ivy... babe". LOL!

Cal Tech Guy: Oh you went to USC? I went to a California Ivy too!
USC Girl: Oh yea? Which one?
Cal Tech Guy: I went to Cal Tech.
USC Girl : I see... hmmm.
USC girl calls girlfriends
USC Girl: sorry girls, I won't be able to make it, I got a hot date tonight!

(california ivy - UCLA, Cal Tech, USC, Berkeley, UCSD, Pomona/HarveyMudd/Claremont, and Stanfurd(although we would gladly trade Stanfurd for MIT to come join us)

See guys this is what happens when you smoke too much weed.

Yea, well people wouldn't smoke weed if the world wasn't so whack to begin with.

Dude, the guys at Cal Tech can't get dates with USC girls. What is the guy to girl ratio at Cal Tech anyway?

i wouldnt consider ucsd a ca ivy, but thats just my opinion. there are cal state schools with far superior programs and reputations.
