What happens to the students who want to stay away from alcohol?

I'm interested in attending UT, but I really don't want alcohol to be a big part of my life (as it kinda seems from stories I've heard about UT).

This won't mean I won't have any friends, right? Ha ha...

Also, I've heard of kids who promise they "won't drink" at UT and then when they get there, within a week they already had something...

So anyone care to share their thoughts and experiences?

You should get the definition of "friends" right.

UT is huge. It is so huge that they have a special group for pagans, okay? I saw the tiny little notice in the Daily Texan. You're going to find friends no matter what your creed, race, doctrine, morals, ethics, whatever.

there's 56,000~ people at UT. It's fairly easy to find a group of friends who doesnt drink, and its easy for you to exercise self control and not drink.

That's what I thought too, that it would be somewhat easy to find friends who don't drink at a school of this size. However, a friend of mine who is currently a freshman at UT, said that she has trouble finding new friends who do not drink and it's very hard for her to trust people.

However, I don't know how much she has tried to find non-drinking friends and what kinds of groups she has joined if any.

About the exercising self-control advice, I'm not worried about whether or not I myself will or will not drink. I'm only worried about not finding other non-drinking people.

You really dont have to look too hard to find non-drinking friends....there are so many people that it would be impossible to not find all kinds of different people from all walks of life....

UT is known as a "party" school..... but if your shy it doesnt really matter what college you go to....it will be hard to meet people...

Plus, if you are so self-assured about your decision not to drink you really shouldn't have a problem hanging out with people who DO drink. Trust me, 50,000 students aren't all getting wasted every Saturday night.

All right, thank you everyone for your responses. Maybe I'm just overreacting to the "party school" reputation.

I go to UT and I rarely drink. It's not hard. I hang out with people who do drink and it's a non-issue.
