I am a sophomore, and we are doing class selection right now for the next two years. My biggest considerations when picking these classes are 1. How strong I am at them and
2. How likely I will pass the IB exam of them.

I have always been strongest in classes like history, and to a lesser degree English, and I have alway been weakest in any sciences.

I also want to pick classes that will help me get into college for what I want to do (Political Science, International Relations, or Law) and later have a career.

These are the subjects that I'm sure I will take:
English HL (mandatory at my school)
History HL
French SL (mandatory at my school)

And the ones I'm undecided on:
Economics HL or Psychology HL/ SL
Biology SL/ HL
Math Studies/ Math SL

What do you think I should take? Thank you for your input!

What math are you currently in and how well are you doing in it? Math studies is a considered to be a joke, it covers algebra 2 and pre calc through high school where as math SL covers pre cal and calculus 1.
Since you’re weak in science, I would recommend Biology SL.
So that means your social studies elective, economics and psychology, has to be at an HL level. I think either one is fine, psych sounds more interesting but economics may be more useful. Anyways, hope this helps :)

Thank you so much for responding!

I’m taking Trigonometry this semester, and geometry next, which is considered the most advanced math for someone who didn’t take geometry in middle school. I am getting A’s and B’s, but my teacher allows us to do test corrections, which count as another test grade, so I honestly don’t know what my grade would be without them. She recommended SL for me but apparently Studs is for people who want to pursue careers that aren’t math or science related?

I don’t know if I should use my time for classes that will help me more in my future, or actually take math to help me learn more, and to get an AP credit.

Yeah your teacher is right about math studies being for people who don’t plan on doing anything math and science related. Why kind of schools are you aiming at? A lot of top tier schools would rather you take IB math SL.

My number one school right now is Georgetown, so I want to stay competitive while still concentrating on the humanities a bit more than math and science.

Are you aiming for the diploma, or just the certificate?

I am trying to get my diploma.

Well, I think for sure you should take Math SL. And I agree about you also taking Biology SL. I’m not sure about the others…

Well thank you for your advice!
