What if I can't handle college/my major?

I seriously went online to look at my schedule today and had an anxiety attack. Like, feeling like puking and my heart was gonna stop. I'm scared, haha. I don't think I can handle the work, I think I'm gonna fail everything.

I have a week after classes start to change my classes without a professors signature. Do you think that is enough time to asses whether I can handle my major? If not, to change to ANYTHING else. Since it would be the beginning of the semester/my college experience, would it be bad to drop everything and change?

I switched my major from what I originally signed up for. So many labs and sciences! I did well in high school in these honors/AP classes, but I know college is WAY different.

Personally, I could tell if a class was going to be easy or difficult for me after the first lecture, but that will come with time and experience. Are you taking the recommended plan for your major? If this is what your adviser or department recommended, then it is likely because it is a plan that will put you on track for graduation AND many students are able to succeed with this mixture of courses.

Are you interested in your major? Is it something you have shown aptitude for before? If you like science classes, then you will likely do well (or at least, be more willing to put in the work to do well).

The best advice is to just keep up with the work. The biggest difference from college and high school is just that professors won’t hold your hand through the work. You may have classes where your grade is comprised entirely of midterms and finals. You will be responsible for doing the reading and assignments, and for asking for help if you need it. If you are used to keeping track of your own academic work and are pretty independent about your schoolwork, you will likely adapt quickly.

Keep an eye on what resources your college provides. Many colleges have tutoring services, workshops, or help rooms for commonly taken subjects/classes. Go to your professor’s office hours or TA with questions. Attend class regularly, and take good notes. Do the work, ask for help if you need it, and you’ll be fine.
