What If You Decide To Switch Majors???

Are you allowed to change your mind about what you want to major in after you've been accepted as a transfer?

It depends on the school. For many Ivies and top schools, there is a very high chance you’ll waste more than a semester taking classes in the major you initially intended, but not always.

Also, schools like Yale and Harvard could see your change of major as grounds for “misrepresentation of facts” on your application and revoke your admission and/or degree. It’s happened dozens of times to many applicants, but this isn’t likely if you’ve already had experience in the major you want to change to.

For other schools, especially state schools, switching your major is a matter of having a long discussion with your advisor at that university or just filling out some paperwork.

Either way, think carefully, and choose wisely.

So I gather from your post that transfer students are viewed differently than those who began as freshmen and decided to change their minds?? Doesn’t the average college student switch majors at least twice during the course of the four years?

Lots of people switch majors. However depending on the specific institution, and the specific majors that you are switching between, there can be complications along the way. Pick up the phone. Call the college/university that has accepted you. Ask them if it will be a problem. They are the only ones who can answer your question about your specific situation.

Not sure why, exactly, you’re implying that people who change majors are immature? If so, there are an awful lot of immature people walking around college campuses.

I seemed to have touched a nerve with you when I asked if it is allowed for those who transfer (by the way, sophomore year, not junior) to change their minds about what to major in.

I realize that switching from one college to another within a university can pose problems (ie., Arts & Sciences to Engineering, Business, etc.). Just wondering if one can switch from say History to English.

That’s not really what I’m implying. Just saying that if I were an admissions rep, that kind of maturity would impress me, but I’m not. Much of it is speculation anyway. People who have no idea what they want to do still get in top colleges.
