I got a 2220 the first time I took the SAT. I took it again in June, and received a 2170. Does this hurt me? Should I retake it again?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I think it will hurt a little bit. All colleges like to see drastic improvement in their applicants' SAT/ACT scores (obviously). But your 1st SAT score is really good, so that'll reduce your disadvantage.

I think that you should take a 3rd SAT, but make sure you don't get lower than your 2nd SAT score.

Oh my god.

30 points decreased.

there's no way of knowing. They will obviously see that you took it a second time in an attempt to improve your already great score( so they'll like the fact that you believed you could do even beter than you did the first time). But on the other hand they'll think you didn't study/ were so confident after your first score that you didn't put any effort into ensuring that your second score was better.

The scores are very similar, so I wouldn't really consider the second score a much worse one. You could have just not felt as well or something like that. I don't think it will hurt you too much. Did any of your individual section scores improve?

Actually, it's 50 points. But still no biggie. =). I wouldn't retake with that score.

Oh my god.

I'm an idiot lol.

That so won't matter. They take your highest score.

It makes it look like you got the lucky the first time.

to clarify here are my separate scores: M/V/W: 780/750/690, and 2nd time: 750/720/700. Should I retake it again?
Also, I did not get lucky the first time: it was lower than I expected, that's why I retook it (and it was October 2005, when they had a grading error) in fact, I got a 236 on PSAT, which is actually a better estimate of my abilities.

bump...........

"in fact, I got a 236 on PSAT, which is actually a better estimate of my abilities."
awfully sure of ourselves, no?

and all grading errors have been corrected, that is no excuse
i think it's fine if you retake it, but uh, it's not so good if you don't do better twice in a row, as has been mentioned

You either did not prepare for the retest or you had a bad testing day. Study for it and nail it next time. Also check out the ACT.

After your third test, scores tend to flatline. Maybe you have already reached your maximum? Just a thought.

ManUtd20Ole, what's with the sarcasm? I'm just trying to help out Ivy_07. If you're gonna comment, maybe say something that will actually be helpful.

Ivy, I say go for the 3rd SAT, only if you think you can improve, and if 2200 isn't high enough for your dream school. But if 2200 is enough to get into the school you want, then I don't think you'll have to take the SAT a 3rd time.

I wasn't being sarcastic toward you ^.

I was slightly mocking the original poster.

And then I embarrassed myself with a stupid miscalculation.

So I think we're all even.

damn man, retaking a 2200?

i'd be so happy with a 2200.

Oh right, oops. Sorry ManUtd20Ole, kind of sounded like you were being sarcastic to me & I was thinking "hey, what've I done? I'm only trying to help".

Lol dw about the miscalculation. nobody here knows who you are anyway. Luckily, this is all pretty anonymous.

236 is not a good estimate of your skill if you got a 2170/2220 on teh real test. It means you got very lucky of the psat.

If you drop by around 10-40 pts, I think it's ok, cuz everybody is bound to do differently on different days. THeres always a bit of variation. Confirm this. I went from 800 800 680(CR) to 800 780 630(CR).

you are screwed.
