Hello everyone,

I'm an international, first of all. My school doesn't have a counselor. So I suppose I will have to ask my principal to assume that responsibility.

However, I don't seem to get a hold of what counseling is for. I know they're supposed to help you apply, but here, I'm talking about their official role in the situation.

I have heard many of you talk about things that can only be sent through the counselor. How does that work ? Are those recommendations ? Is the counselor supposed to do it all ?

I really need some clarifications, and I'm sure you guys will help. Thank you so much.

The counselor submits the school form which is a common app form giving detail about your school, its students, grades and courses, and info detail about you which can be a complete recommendation or something much less detailed. This information must be updated periodically on optional and mid year forms, and a final report must be sent by the counselor after you graduate. Often in the US the counselor also submits student transcripts, but those can also be submitted other ways.

For schools with full time counselors, those tasks don’t occupy their full time, so they also spend time working with students in a variety of other ways, none of which are relevant to your common app process.
