I just had my transcripts mailed to UMich and NYU and on there said something like on Dean's List.

*** does that mean and is that even worth anything (guessing it's cause of grades) on applications?

It's an academic honor (usually GPA based) much like an honor roll.

"If a student's semester GPA is 3.80 or above and does not include any withdrawals or incompletes, he or she will qualify for the Dean's List"

An aside: more and more colleges are capping academic honors such as Dean's List and Latin Honors (cum laude, etc.) as a percentage of the student body rather than GPA. Because of grade inflation, some such "honors" had become nearly meaningless.

it's different for different schools.
at my school, dean's list is the top 10% students which is equivalent of 3.5 or higher

is it given every semester ? or every school year ?
