I’ve been playing for over a decade, but still not good. Btw what pieces are you all playing?

Clementi’s Sonatina in C Major, Op. 36 No. 1.
(Which is pathetic given how long I’ve been “playing” the piano…there are a gazillion YouTube videos of six-year-olds playing it.)

So… right now, I’m focusing on making my recording. Basically that means I’m not playing any of the pieces I would normally be playing. For my recording, I’m playing a Bach solo and Faure Elegie.

Guys, I think I have a bit of a problem here. So, I’m doing piano at my local uni, but my first teacher left, and I have a new teacher. My theory is weak, so this new person is focusing on that; however, he’s not letting me play any pieces until my “theory is good.” He’s also refused to let me enter the local piano competitions where they rank you “superior” and whatnot.

Is this logical? Should I try to find a new teacher?

Piano and alto sax!

this website should give the levels of your pieces
[url=Piano Street Sheet Music Library, page 1: Albéniz - Bach]Alb

I like it.

piano (since 5)
tenor sax (started learning in grade 10)
flute (since grade 7)
random bits of harmonica

@TeamRocket - That sounds like bs. I’ve been playing since I was in 2nd grade, never took a theory class in my life, and have won numerous competitions. As long as you know the ABSOLUTE basics (rhythms, rests, dynamics, etc.) you should be fine…no need for chord analysis…

Violin since 5th grade.
I’ve been picking up piano for recreational purposes. My technique is about as crappy as it gets but I’m not looking to win any awards. It’s just a lovely instrument.

btw way how do you do the quote thing.
@catching infinity, what competitions have you won? I beg to differ on the complete bs part, it is complete bs for a novice like TeamRocketGrunt( no offense), but anyone who has played for over a decade and 5,000 hours the focus turns away from basics like rhythms, to more advanced concepts such as interpretation and expressing it. Otherwise performance might sound good, but give a fake feeling.

I stupidly tried to tackle Chopin’s Ocean Etude just now…I don’t even know what I was thinking. My finger dexterity makes everything a constant uphill battle, lol.

Didgeridoo.
Also piple organ. And about 7 other instruments.
But didge is the awesomest.

So I should try to find a new teacher? this guy isn’t even letting me play Chopin’s Prelude in E Minor because I “don’t have emotion.”
