What about UChicago particularly attracts you to the school? It would be preferable if it was something very generic like a "beautiful campus" or something you can find on the brochure?

I had to work throughout the summer and I'm an international so I could not visit schools, thus I'm trying to find out about the schools like this.

I assume you mean that you want it to be stuff that’s NOT very generic and CAN’T be found on the brochure.

But even then, the beautiful campus is a huge perk. I usually explore campus and take pictures once a week. I also really enjoy the fact that the U of C is in Chicago. It’s a really great and affordable city with amazing food all over the place. Never once have I felt like there’s not enough to do either on campus or in the city.

Finally, and most importantly, I really enjoy the quality of the student body. There’s enough diversity in personalities to make it interesting. For instance, poking fun at the hipsters is a pretty common thing to do. That said, the unifying theme is that most everyone is intelligent and curious about the world. U of C students tend to be motivated by more than just the prospect of a nice paycheck, and they’re willing to strike up a conversation on just about anything. If you want to talk about your classes, you’ll be met with a welcoming response. I’ve also been involved in many a dining hall debate about the day’s ice cream flavors. I don’t really know how other colleges compare in this respect, but I’ve never before been in a place where I’ve felt so free to express my opinions and have people listen and respond to them.

From what I’ve gathered, Chicago’s student body is one of the most unique things about it. They’re really famous for having the quirky intellectuals who care more about learning than earning a good paycheck. The atmosphere is very academic, though not necessarily in an imposing way. UChicago students have very curious and active minds. I’m sure there are students like this at any good university, but Chicago just seems to have a lot of these kids.

Coming back from my regional Send-Off Party, I’d say my number one thing would be that people don’t take themselves too seriously. Yeah, sure, every so often you get a ‘That Kid,’ but for the most part people here are pretty laid back and tolerant. They’ll debate you like hell, but no one’s going to hold a grudge against you.
