I initially considered the toothpaste. Then I could not find how it would relate to my character.

I wonder if anyone has ever NOT considered the toothpaste connection.
I wonder if someone has actually written about it.

I didn't even think of toothpaste. My first instinct was my blanket because it's so comfortable that it's weird to sleep without it. But then I thought it made me sound dependent and like I was going to be homesick, which isn't true, hence my Cheez Whiz choice.

The slogan of Colgate toothpaste in my country is : Colgate-no tooth decay (in Vietnamese,it is 'khong sau rang') .That's the reason why I usually call Colgate University: Khong sau rang ,or Ksr .So funny:D

While we're nervously waiting for RD decisions, I thought I would revive this thread.

My first line was "You mean, besides my i-Pod, right?" Went on to describe a quilt my mom made for me which has scenes from some of our past summer vacations. Good for the Hamilton winters and doesn't need batteries!

very cool, and yeah, besides the ipod. i thought about saying ipod and was like, oh wait... im supposed to be 'original,' hmmm...

Probably because many of the best students end up coming from the wait-lists of Dartmouth and Williams.

Crap, I said I'd bring my i-Pod. Funny thing is, I thought it was brilliant at the time because even though most people would truely bring their i-Pod as their one item, they wouldn't want to actually admit it. Thanks for that slap in the face! But I thought I backed it up with legitimate reasons.

I wouldn't sweat it - according to their website, Colgate seems to be more interested in your academic record. They also stressed this during the campus info session. Did you participate in any of the online discussions?

I said I'd bring my running shoes, and I talked about how I ran towards my problems instead of away from them. I made a referrence to forrest gump (RUN FORREST RUN!), it was fun. I talked about how I run when I need to clear my head and think. I enjoyed the essay.

Btw, I just called, and they said decisions are being mailed later this week. Anyone else think that's too far away :-P

i said my favorite pair of pink ugly socks. sort of satirized the entire thing making them seem like this absolutely dire necessity for life and adding in corny reasons that showed i knew a lot about colgate. i also discussed the reason that socks was "one item." seemed original.

and i dont own any ugly pink socks although coincidentally im wearing some hot pink socks as we speak.

I wrote about my Red Sox hat.

shrug

i was around for the beginnings of this thread, debating what i should write about. i ended up writing about my dads acoustic guitar, sorta connected it to college experience, and it also spoke to my 'characteristics'. apparently it worked, as i was accepted as an "Alumni Memorial Scholar".

A friend of mine who got accepted in the University of Cambridge and Imperial College in UK helped me out with this. I wrote about my country's flag (i know it's pretty trite) but it was a damn good essay.

well i seem to be the only one who didnt write about a physical object... i looked up the meaning as " object : The goal intended to be attained (and which is believed to be attainable)" and talked about making a difference in all spheres during my stay at colgate. hope I didnt go off topic...

My Object: my mother's recipe for her excellent Chocolate Chip Cookies... it was a pretty solid essay

hehe, i hope they have a sense of humor

it's a good topic. i hated the "Why us?" question - at some point all the universities started looking to me the same, with a few exceptions of course, and I had to redo all of my research to write those essays. having to write about one object that i would bring to colgate was quite a relief. i just picked the first object that came to my mind - my tennis raquet - an began writing. it was one of the few essays i enjoyed working on. i agree that what you select does not matter that much, what is important is how you approach the topic, what you tell about yourself, and how this object fits into the general picture of yourself that you are "painting" for the admissions office. if you pick something you trully love, there is no way that you'll write a "bad" essay, just because you'll show that you are passionate about something, that you have dedicated a lot of effort and time to it, and that beside all else you are a breathing and feeling human being :)

My snowboard.

I said I would bring wool socks and I got in AMS

i talked about my stick from climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.. :)
And yeah, I enjoyed the essay, too..
