What is a design portfolio supposed to look like?

What is a design portfolio even supposed to look like? How is it supposed to be put together-and what from, how big...etc. HELP

Have you tried looking up the specific portfolio requirements under the admissions department of each school by website? Sometimes portfolio expectations can be found under Admissions (in an art school) or in the Art department if it's in a general college or university with an art major.

Also, can you name the schools you're interested in, so people can help a bit more.
A portfolio at RISD or MICA might be different from a Supplementary Arts Portfolio at a liberal arts college or university.

I live in NC, so I am mainly looking at the College of Design at NC State. I am applying to graphic design.

I've already looked at the requirements on their website, however, it seemed to be a little "broader" than I would have liked. They don't really give specifics on size or how the portfolio should be put together.

Since you've done your web research, and are only dealing with one school "mainly", I'd say it's time to phone their academic department office to inquire about more specifics on the size and assembly they prefer. Ask "What do most students submit.." if they don't have a list somewhere.

And you're sure they don't call for slides, or a computer screenshow--but want the actual originals? Are they asking for hand-sketches and drawings, in other words, or computer submssions only?

If it's originals, be sure you understand how they'll return your portfolio of originals, after they've finished looking it over.

BTW, are you looking at more than one place (you said "mainly looking at NC..) Everyone needs a fallback or safety, even though you hope for one in particular.
