O.kay, most likely, my average for this year will be a 3.5, definitely not bad but it ain't the best. In the midst of the competitive stats of those at CC and my high school, I fail to find my niche in the grand scheme of grades. I don't know if I should pride myself on a 3.5 gpa or if I should strive for better.
Any opinions?

If that were my gpa, I'd strive for better. But that's just me. If you think you've done your very best, then I suppose you could maintain that GPA. Don't drop it any lower though, which I'm sure you won't.

As cliche as it sound, just do your best. if 3.5 is your best than you should be proud of yourself, but if you know you can do better, obviously strive to do better.

GPA is all relative to what colleges you are shooting for, and it could be balanced out sometimes by crazy SAT scores. 3.5 "might" get you in the scheme of things for the regualr public universities. How many AP's does that include? If that GPA is weighted, then that definitely has to go higher to get into a good public or even private.

I guess the "Good-ness" of your GPA would depend on how it compares with the rest of your school. Take my school for instance (where we don't have weighted grades, which I really really really dont get) where Grade Inflation has gotten soooooo bad that if you have a B average (GPA of like 3.4/3.5 or so, I think), you're in the bottom half of a 811 person class (from people who take like "Creative Foods", "Gourmet Foods", "Basketweaving", "Basketweaving II"...)

As the person before me said, just try your best. A good GPA is the GPA you have when you're trying your best.

lmao you got a basketweaving class at your school? thats EXTREME!!!!

It really is all relative- a 3.7 would make you #10 out of 260 in my high school class.

ya... in our school we go by weighted... i have a 3.66uw... which is good for 80/410... but after weighting i go to 24... it's a good thing :)

I think it really matters on your school. For instance, I have a 3.5ish/3.6ish..but that is a pretty good gpa at my school.

I don't understand how basically everyone here on cc has such high gpas...I know my school deflates grades..but I get good grades and then it looks really bad here. Also, at my school, people go to really good school (no ives, sometimes cornel, upenn)...but basically the entire grade of 100 goes onto good schools...and the entire grade does not have 3.8's and above.

oh..and a b+ at my school is a 3.5...not a B.. the highest gpa you can get at my school with all honors/ap (all A's) is like a 4.034

Any GPA dat u worked hard for is good. When i was freshman, i had a 3.4 weighted in the first semester and said to myself, "I know i can more better than this crappy grade." so guess what, i sat down started to study harder than ever and ended with a 4.0 weighted. then i started to get in the 4.8 GPA range for the next 2 years.

See... that's what I'm saying... My school is just messed up, lol. I have a 3.97 GPA (Unweighted cause my school doesn't do weighted!!!), I've taken all of the AP/Enriched classes that were offered to me and I would think I have taken around the same number as the person who has the most in my grade, but... I'm 49th / 811 people. Once again... lol...

:)

Well, to give you guys a good picture of the grading that goes on at my school. Talking to my guidance counselor the other day, I have been told I'm either at or near being within the top 10% of my class of around 150. Basically, I'm at the edge of the decile(sp?).

Anyways, to get to the center of the problem, I feel that I can do better than a 3.5. However, I don't want to stress out about it. This is why I created this thread. Is my gpa good enough to not be worried or what? Of course, I want to attend a competitive college.

Well... I think that the question of whether or not you should be worried or not is only something you can answer. When I come home with a 4.8(for the quarter) I am POed that I didn't get a 5.0. When I scored poorly on standardized tests, I studied like nothing you'd believe and I still did poorly... I realized that it was not something I could realistically change.

BUT, a 3.5 isn't bad if the highest in your school is just over 4.0. At my school it is "normal" for quite a few kids to graduate with weighted cum. GPAs around 4.4/4.5 and unweighted at 4.0.

Good luck and do what you feel is best for yourself.
