MsTamourineMan,

Most hiring for elementary school teachers is local. In other words, you are best off choosing the part of the country that you want to make your career in and then studying there so that all of your internships, observation courses, and student teaching is in a place where your contacts will help you get your first job. If you think that you’d like to teach in California (if not necessarily in your immediate neighborhood), stroll by your old elementary school and have a chat with the principal and some of your favorite teachers. Ask them where they studied, and which things you should be looking for in a program. Ask them which colleges and universities have a reputation for producing first year teachers who can hit the ground running (so to speak). These folks will have lots of good ideas for you.
