What is a likely letter?

I have no idea what a likely letter is… is it an email or a physical letter? Do they send in the likely letters near decision date? I’m only asking this because I got a letter from Columbia after being a Regional Finalist for Siemens.

Letter basically started off:

"Congratulations on your success in the Siemens Competition! In receiving one of the most prestigious national awards for student research, you have been recognized not only for your scientific accomplishments but also for your potential to contribute to the larger fields of science and math.

As you look forward to future achievements, I invite you to consider how Columbia can help you continue your research and pursue your passions in science and engineering."

Not boasting or anything, just genuinely curious (probably doesn’t mean anything anyways).

Likelies are pretty unambiguous in most cases. CC’s likelies start out like this, I believe: “I am delighted to inform you that your application to Columbia University has been carefully evaluated and that you have earned designation as a likely candidate for admission to Columbia College.” Fu’s letters are almost identical, with a couple things changed.

I’m pretty sure that’s not a likely, but it is encouraging! Good luck!

That would be a likely.

I’m with @Tshiknn: College Likely Letters basically state that all indications point to your receiving an acceptance letter from us when they are issued. But regardless, congrats. I would think Columbia is highly interested in you.
