What is a UCSB Extension?

I want to become a marketing manager and saw that UCSB had a marketing “extension”? IDK what that is. Assuming I chose UCSB I’d get a comms degree. Deciding whether I’m better off there or the biz admin program at UCR.

Also, dunno if it matters, but I’d be a transfer from a CCC

Extension is not for you. It is an umbrella organization affiliated with UC campuses that provides continuing education, not a 4-year degree.

Would it do anything for me (on top of comms degree)? Am I not allowed to do it?

The UC Extensions are programs for people who already have a 4-year degree and are not attending a college full-time. It is for people who perhaps want a certificate in something or continuing education units to further their career.

UCSB Extension also allows people to take real UCSB classes, but they can only register on the first day of classes, and so might need to “crash” the class. There is a page that says this can be useful for graduating seniors who do not plan to take a full load and want to save a little money (but at the risk of not getting a class that fills up): http://extension.ucsb.edu/contentManagement.do?method=load&code=CM000018

I thought you were thinking of attending UCSB and just enrolling in Extension classes. If you’ll be a regular UCSB student, it does look like they offer courses for UCSB students. http://extension.ucsb.edu/static/landing/ucsb-students.jsp I don’t know about costs, or how many students actually take their classes.

The real differentiator in getting a good job out of college is experience. You want to take part in student activities (and maybe Extension classes) so that you are a good candidate for internships. Like most colleges, UCSB has groups related to Marketing and business. For example, https://ucsbama.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/ If you are going to be visiting campus before you decide maybe you can email one of the officers and ask to meet for coffee to get their take, or just email one of them to find out more from a current student about Extension.

Lots of people take these classes when they want a Master’s in CS but don’t have the pre-reqs for admission, when they come from a Math, bio, chemistry, etc. background. Also exchange (grad) students often sign up for their classes through UCSB Extension. This is how the Extension school is run at all the UCs. But you can’t register until classes start. You can get a signature on the first day, and sometimes you need to wait an extra week or two for the department to go through all the paperwork.

UCSB Extension does offer a few classes independent of the regular UCSB classes, but it’s mostly the regular UCSB classes that people sign up for. Tuition is pretty cheap too.
